Sterling Silver History
Experts believe that silver alloy, used today as sterling silver, originated in continental Europe in the 12th century. Pure silver was found to be a soft and easily damageable material. When combined with other metals, most commonly cooper, it produced a tougher material that could be heavily relied on. Throughout the next few centuries, sterling silver was used as currency and for household items. It was often used as silverware and became the material used in a proper table setting between 1840 and 1940 throughout the United States and Europe. Sterling Silver Composition
While pure silver can be combined with many different types of metals, sterling silver is created when combining pure silver with copper. This necklace is not a bad choice for people looking to wear some simple adornment, but it's really nothing special. On the plus side, the silver chain is sturdy (courtesy of the popcorning) and unlikely to tangle or break. It's not a high-shine chain, but it's a nice chain nevertheless.
The beads are pretty - the rose gold bead is lightweight but seems sturdy enough for jewelry. (Could be susceptible to crushing if not properly stored or handled). They all shine nicely and pick up the light. In the Amazon picture, you can see some reflecting of the rose gold color on the silver beads to each side of it. The beads can be repositioned along the chain (so if you extend that adjustable chain the extra inch, you can center them). Of course, that also means the beads can get off-center when you wear the necklace, but the flexibility of the length seems like a fair trade. However, do watch the balls when wearing - they are snug on the chain and lightweight enough that if they shift out of place, they'll stay out of place. You need to manually slide them back.
For scale, I've uploaded an image (which should be available in the customer images section (currently on the right lower half of the page), if all is working properly) of the beads next to a penny.
I find the lobster claw extremely difficult to work. A little stiff and clumsy, it has trouble connecting to the largest ring on the rear due to the extra inch of trailing links (which are also difficult to hook, as they are smaller) connected to it. I *can* put it on myself, with multiple tries, though. Getting it off is even harder, as I have to get help and then go through a "hold still" process with mounting frustration as my husband tries to get it apart.
The question for me here would depend on the cost.Read more ›
