We've been strictly grain-free with our dog since we got her almost four years ago from a no-kill sanctuary that was feeding her one of the junk supermarket brands (short name, starts with an I). For a long time we had her on the various flavors of Blue Buffalo Wilderness but for the last year or so she's been on Merrick's grain-free kibble (used to be called B.G. - Before Grain - but has since been slightly overhauled but quality is equal). We're always looking at the various new grain-free kibbles, so the chance to sample Instinct's Raw Boost Chicken Meal formula was a welcome one. The hook is that, along with the traditional kibble pieces, there are freeze-dried nuggets of raw food mixed in, designed to aid in digestive health.

I'm not a vet, I'm not a dog food expert - I consult a couple different websites that really seem to have an authoritative take on pet food (easily found when googling "pet food analysis" or something similar). You can also find a good deal of information the official Nature's Variety website. I'm distrustful of any edible pet food products coming out of China. Unfortunately, Nature's Instinct DOES source one ingredient from China - rabbit - justifying it with the claim that it's the best place to get rabbit meat. I don't think China is the best place to get ANY pet food ingredient. Even if Chinese rabbit meat is as safe as Nature's Variety claims it is, I despise supporting any edible pet products sourced even partially from China. That countries products have killed or sickened too many dogs to give them a pass on anything, in my opinion.

That said, this particular formula, Instinct Raw Boost Chicken Meal, does not appear to contain any rabbit. It also doesn't have any chemicals.

Very, VERY inconsistent "raw" chicken in it (please see photo). The base food is fine (the one without the raw) but this one is so hit or miss it's just not worth it. Latest bag had about 15-20 pieces of "raw" chicken in it. Some bags are overflowing with it. Their manufacturing quality assurance team is utterly useless and quite frankly, it offends me that someone can be so incompetent and retain their job. Avoid this product at all costs.

More photos added - for the idiots/haters out there.

Our puppy mill rescue dog (an 8lb pomeranian) has had digestion problems for almost a year when we first got her and we had tried a few different foods at the suggestion of our vet. We finally got an allergy test, which was littered with many things our dog could not eat - most of which were in the higher rated dog foods. We had been using the regular Nature's Instinct (no rawboost) for a few months, which is a bit cheaper, with some success. I stumbled across this one at a pet store and saw it was supposed to help with digestion. We gave it a shot and have been very pleased. Our dog's stool has been firm for almost 6 months straight and she seems to love it. The only problem is she digs out the "raw bits" first and pushes the regular kibble to the floor. Usually she leaves a portion of the regular kibble until the next meal so we add a couple raw bits and by then she will finish off the rest. I would say this is like the doggy version of Lucky Charms. It may be difficult to get them to eat anything but the marshmallows! If your dog has pretty good digestion already you can try mixing this food with the regular Nature's Instinct for cheaper mix.

If you have OCD, keep looking, eventually you will find your way back here. I am always checking out what I feed our dogs, reading ingredients comparing cost per serving, offsetting that with how much poop we have to pick up. Well, I bought this first at Petco looking at the benefit of a little Raw. The Dog has taste buds too...Blue Buffalo < Taste of the Wild < Bark at the Moon < Instinct Raw Boost. All are good foods, sure they cost a bit more, but are not the most expensive out there. This food is great for our Retriever and Shepherd.

This food is expensive, but well worth it. I have a large standard poodle with a sensitive stomach and a grand poop producer. My primary goal was to reduce the poop factor since I have a small yard. This definitely does that. He produces about 1/4 of what he used to. Cleaner yard. Also, this food is rich, so he needs about half of what other foods require. So although it is expensive, it actually turns out to be about the same because I don't have to feed him as much. He is feeling VERY playful and has clear eyes, soft coat and plenty of energy. This is premium food with premium results.

This food is excellent. Your dog's feces will be more compact and less smelly. The food itself smells good...when was the last time you purchased a good smelling dog food? This is not your regular disgusting & rancid top quality food. Coats are nice, teeth are clean, breath is fresh.

I would, however, order from other internet sites - you will find this cheaper at PetFlow. I don't know why amazon has such a high mark-up on it.

I will preface and say I do not think there is enough "raw boost" to be able to call it raw boost for the large bag- I think it is a marketing gimmick but I do feel it is the best kibble on the market. My boys love this food, and for my doberman to maintain his sleek 100 lb figure, he only needs 3 1/2 cups a day.
