Editorial Comment: About 3 weeks ago I bought the Sony XBR65X950B 4k TV. I decided to wait to write a review until I had a chance to more fully experience what it has to offer. I find it very frustrating when people write reviews when they don't even own the product, or they have some vendetta against the company, or they are jealous of someone that can afford such a product, and give the TV a poor rating on that basis. It's funny (not really) how politics can even get into a product review. This should be a forum to talk about a product you own and your experiences and opinions about that product. I own the Sony XBR65X950B. End of editorial.

Prior to buying this TV I had the Samsung UN65HU9000FXZA, Samsung's flagship 4k TV. It had a defect so I sent it back. In the interim Sony released the XBR65X950B. Since I had the Samsung for about 3 weeks I am able to do a fairly decent comparison between the 2 TVs. In a nutshell I thought the Samsung was very good, at times simply amazing. Black levels were good. Color was good. Up converting was good. Sound was decent. 3D was good. Off angle was OK, though I think more of an issue due to the curved screen. Note: To get local stations I have my TV's hooked up to an antennae in my attic. If you have good reception, over-the-air TV video quality is far superior to DirecTV or cable. The local signal is uncompressed. When watching prime time broadcasts the quality is simply stunning. It looks like film. This was the case with both the Samsung and the Sony.

My thoughts on the Sony XBR65X950B

General Comments: Though the Samsung is a very good 4k TV (B+), the Sony is amazing (A+), as it should be for such a ridiculous price. In short, it is a much better TV than the Samsung.Read more ›

I have the 85" and so far I love it. The built in wireless works really well and can stream full HD easily. I don't actually use the feature as it is all through the receiver but I tested it for fun and it was very impressed. I watch a lot of sports and I was worried about the speed and it is excellent. The menu system is extremely easy to use and customize to your needs. I've never liked the picture on a projector but wanted the large size, this TV while expensive is fantastic.

The only negative on the TV I would say is the depth. The Martin Logan speakers that are mounted along side had to add spacers to increase their depth to match the TV.

I was skeptical about buying a 2 year old TV that was NIB. I read all of the Amazon reviews and also Crutchfield, PC mag and many others. This TV is unbelievable. Even in 2D mode the picture has a lot more depth than my Panasonic 50 inch plasma which is still outstanding and in my spare bedroom now. The color is very vivid and have not noticed any blurring or shadowing. The programing and setup is very easy but you will need 2 people to mount it, it is very large. The 3D glasses sync automatically and seem to work just fine at any angle. This TV was price much lower on Amazon than the Sony website or any other website that I looked at. The delivery was free and 2 people brought it to my house on a scheduled delivery date/time. If you want an awesome TV, then this is the one. Although 3D and 4K are not available through cable or satellite you will be prepared for when they are. Would definitely recommend if this is the size and type of TV that you want.

amazing color! reflects TRUE color: skin tone is the same as in real life!! black is really black. it's a very subtle but powerful viewing experience once you sense the accuracy of the images on the screen. sony knows color and how to make color like no one else on the market....it's almost equal to the images on an OLED TV.

only con are the set up instructions: there are none!! if u r not tech savvy you may waste lots of time trying to figure things out. has 2 removable back panels with LOTS of slots for tons of HDMI cables, as well as analog cables....but once u r connected, the TV walks you thru the pairing of the remotes with your cable eqpt. and yes there are 2 remotes!!! ..(I got help from the place I bought it from).

Excellent picture quality for the $3k price. I compared it to the new 2016 Samsung KS9500 (about $3300) 65inch curved at my local BB. Both are full array back lighting which is a must for me since coming from a plasma 65in Panasonic vt30. I look for deepest blacks which in my opinion give the best contrast in color. I do miss some of the newer internet functions; however picture quality was my priority. The sony connector for cable management which allows for one cable from tv to connector box for multiple HDMI inputs causes some lag. I can confirm this because I use an HDMI splitter to 2 tv's and there was a delay in the audio (this was used in my prior set with direct connection off the splitter and there was no audio lag. I would connect all sources directly to the tv because of this issue. 1080 is my primary viewing source with direct which I feel this set provides the best quality. 4k picture is excellent!

It is now 11 months of watching this 65 inch model. It is the best TV I have ever seen. The black is perfect. The colors were set incorrectly from the factory. My professional calibrator (whom I have used for a number of sets spent almost 3 hours and the results were first rate. There is not too much 4K content available but the material is excellent. This tv is wall mounted in our bedroom so we have not used an audio system except for a subwoofer. For tv speakers these are quite good; of course, no match for a quality 5.1 system.

The owner's manual (thin to almost absent) provides no help with the capabilities of the machine. I am given some thought to replacing our family room tv with the 85 inch Sony but I must come to terms with spending $14,000.

If you want the best flatscreen machine on the market today then this is the correct choice. It is reasonably intuitive to operate and the picture quality is superb. I have not bothered to watch any 3D material so I can not comment. I did hard wire the internet input which appears to be slightly faster than the wireless connection although I did not measure the speeds.
