Blue is an interesting company. They don't have the long lineage of making microphones like some of the more well-known brand names. I've researched them, though, and they are legit. They've been around for about 20 years (in their current form) and I can tell you that they do more than slap a label on some cheap offshore import. They do understand sound and they do put thought and engineering into their products.

I've never owned a Blue microphone before and I'll admit that the reason was that I assumed they were just an importer of cheap junk. I have significant experience in studio and location recording, producing videos being a big part of my career. I am used to microphones that cost as much as a small car. I'm not going to say that this or any product from Blue is in that class, but I will say that they are surprisingly good and well made.

Mikey is a reiteration of a similar previous product that used the old-style Apple 30-pin connector. While that connector was big and clunky it was a good choice for accessories because they locked in and could withstand quite a physical knock. This Mikey, for obvious reasons, uses the newer Lightning connector which is nowhere near as solid of a connection as the old 30-pin connector. Fortunately, as large as it is, Mikey is ultra-light and does not cause undue strain on the Lightning connector.

Because the Lightning connector can be plugged in with the connector facing toward the front or back of the device, Mikey has been designed to swivel and adjust its pickup pattern in almost any way you can imagine. The stereo imaging is, in my opinion, more natural and lifelike than some other similar iPhone/iPad microphones I've used and the overall sound quality is as uncolored as one could expect from a $100 microphone.Read more ›

"Mikey" has a lot of promise and certainly improves audio recording quality in many situations, but it is certainly not a magical panacea for good audio. I tested this device with both my iPhone 5S and my iPad. I was a bit disappointed when I first when to plug it into my iPhone 5S and found that despite my relatively small case (AmazonBasics), I could not get the lightning connector to seat. It would have been great if the connector was a bit offset from the plastic housing to enable it to plug into a case. That being said, I was able to evaluate it without the case.

The first thing I did was try a regular selfie-style review video. I recorded it with Mikey plugged in and unplugged Mikey during the video. I was impressed there was no interruption as the iPad microphone picked up immediately. However, I found that the built-in iPad microphone was actually better! Looking a bit closer at the instructions, I found I had it set to "auto". There is another setting for quiet noise sources and another for loud. Moving the switch to quiet allowed it to pick up my voice a lot better. It has a ton of gain and far more than the iPad by itself.

But the switch has no markings on it! One end is for quiet sounds and the other end for loud, but I can't remember which was is which. There is absolutely no marking on the plastic to let me know. I need the user manual. I can easily see messing this up so I have to find a way to mark the black plastic myself. For the relatively high cost of this accessory, I expected more.Read more ›

The beautiful thing about the Mikey is that it records in stereo, where as the built in only does in mono. This makes live acoustic recordings sound sharper and more crisp. I tested this out with a 5S using Garage Band and my Yamaha GB1 piano and I can say the music came out clearer and more crisp. I got less of a hissing sound while using this.

The Mikey simply connects to the lightning port, and swivels so you can capture the sound from anywhere. Compatible iOS devices will recognize the Mikey automatically and use it as the microphone, except for phone calls and facetime. It is also small and light so you can carry it around with the included pouch.

According to Mikey, the following aps support CD-quality audio with 44.1kHz, 16-bit sample rates:

Multitrack DAW
Music Studio Lite
Studio Mni Recording Studio
SunVox
TwisterWave Audio Editor.

If you need clear and concise audio, and mainly use your iOS device to record, then this is a good buy. It won't replace a sound studio, nor will it replace sophisticated equipment, but it does make a slight difference.

I split the middle on the star rating because not everyone is gonna use the Mikey to record multi-track sessions with the latest iPhone. If you're going to use it as a single track field mic for instance, it's a great little design and a nice sounding mic. It's also a good mic to use for an informal multi-track session on an iPad since access to the iPad headphone port isn't restricted.

Here's the issue with multi-track recording, new iPhone's & Mikey: Apple moved the headphone port on the latest iPhones (6 and above) to the bottom of the phone next to the lightning port where the Mikey plugs in. All good on track 1 but beyond that, the party's over. When it's time to lay down additional tracks and you want to monitor what you've just recorded as a reference, the iPhone headphone port is covered by the Mikey (nor does Mikey have a headphone port so no luck there). The only way to monitor is via the iPhone's speaker which is obviously unacceptable since you're gonna pickup what you've previously recorded in all subsequent tracks.

After a phone call to Blue, a very nice rep confirmed the design issue with the latest iPhones and suggested the older 30 pin Mikey version along with a lightning adapter as the best option. I get the fact that this became an issue because of an Apple design change. Apple has a way of pulling that stuff and it's unfortunate for Blue. It would certainly seem however that the cost for Blue to offer a lightning port stand-off or an angled headphone adapter to circumvent the issue would be negligible. It certainly would have kept me in the game as a customer. Instead I sent back the mic and bought a Line 6 Sonic Port VX Audio I/O and Stereo Microphone. Definitely more expensive but a lot more flexible as well. Very happy with the Sonic Port VX so far.
