The Duke Gets Down in High Style

Gene Chandler’s “Get Down”, released in 1978, has stood the test of time. With the title track becoming a Disco classic, it’s easy to say that Gene Chandler was put on a Disco bandwagon and sold out. Not true. Label mate on 20th Century Edwin Starr did it with “Contact”. Why not the Duke? After all, Gene Chandler has been making hits for over 20 year prior to “Get Down” becoming a staple at all the glamorous Discos across America. And the year was 1978-Disco’s incredible peak. For doubters-take a listen to the famed title track. If it won’t get you moving with its killer beat and sexy background vocals, something is not right. Chandler scored a major Disco, R&B and Pop hit with “Get Down”, signaling a grand comeback from many years of inactivity.

For those that claim that Gene Chandler sold out, they obviously never bothered to listen to the remainder of the album. Chandler was known as a legendary R&B crooner and he more than proves his worth here. Both “Please Sunrise” and “Tomorrow I May Not Feel The Same” are stunning ballads that earned a single release and both became R&B hits and eternal quite storm favorites. “What Now” is another beautiful love song that could have easily become another R&B hit had it been released and promoted as a single. Bluesy “I’m The Traveling Kind” highlights Chandler’s emotional vocal delivery. “Give Me The Cue” and album closer “Lovequake” are both spirited R&B numbers that would sound as good on the dance floor as they would being blasted on car stereo with the windows down.

Major kudos to Big Break Records for re-mastering this long out of print gem and finally making it available on CD. As is always the case with a BBR re-master, the sound is incredible, the liner notes are informative and interesting and the original album cover art is preserved. Another great job by BBR.
