Though I just used the Epica Spice and Coffee Grinder for the first time, I had to write about it.

First off, there are very good grinders offered that cost a bit less, but the Epica offers two important features that are found only in the pricier home grinders. First off, the large stainless steel tub and blade twist off for fast and easy washing. (Try cleaning the grinder and its blade without this feature.) Also, like the more expensive grinders, the Epica's designed so the spices do not spin against the plastic cover. This feature helps keep the cover free from dulling and marring - especially noticeable when grinding hard spices like cumin seeds.

The Epica's construction is solid, hefty, it feels very well made, looks good, is simple to use, and easy to clean up. If I had to make a negative comment, I'd say the power cord could be a bit longer - but, it's really no biggy.

A spice grinder's task is a simple one - to grind spices - fast, evenly, thoroughly. The Epica Spice and Coffee Grinder does everything it's supposed to do, and does it extremely well. I'm glad I made the decision to purchase this product.

(By the way, I rarely write reviews, but noticed this one hasn't yet very many.)

I was not familiar with this brand, so bought it with some reservations. Reviews were good, though, so thought I'd take a chance. Glad I did. This is just what I hoped for. Relatively quiet, the cord easily snugs into the base, it is simple to use and I love that the inside is stainless so you don't have fragrance remaining from herbs. Yes, I bought this just for herbs/spices. The plastic top cap had a bit of the spice smell after washing, but I sprayed it with white vinegar and rinsed it out again, and it's fine. Also, the stainless grinding cup removes so you can easily tip out the ground spices and you can just put the whole stainless cup w/blade into the dishwater. The base of the unit is a square rather than round, so it feels very stable on the countertop when grinding the spices. I do recommend this.

This works pretty much like any other blade grinder with one important difference – you can remove the grinding chamber. That’s a huge plus for me – I’ve been using a Krups blade grinder for years and years and, while it works well, cleaning it is a pain, especially after grinding aromatic spices. This design, with the removable cup, is far, far easier to thoroughly clean.

While it’s billed as a coffee grinder, it has the same limitations as any other blade grinder when it comes to coffee: uneven grinding. A burr grinder will do a much better job on coffee beans since it will produce a far more uniform grind.

My main use for this is as a spice grinder and, for that, it’s been working very well. It has a good amount of power, feels solid and durable, and it’s easy to use. The blade "wings" appear to be a bit smaller than the Krups, but it doesn't seem to hurt performance. The on button is integrated into the top cap which makes pulsing it very simple. Plus, the top cap is designed so it only fits on the grinder in one way so there’s no fumbling to make sure everything lines up.

The grind cup is thick and sturdy metal (I assume stainless) and twist-locks onto the motor body securely. The blade is fixed in the cup.

The other nice feature compared with the Krups is the size of the grinding cup. This is much larger, measuring about 3.25 inches wide and about 3 inches tall. Lots of work room!

While this (as is any other blade grinder) is not the best tool for coffee beans, it’s an excellent tool for other grinding needs. There are a number of design benefits that make this my favorite over my old, but still working, Krups. Highly recommend.

Surprised by this one. I was looking for a replacement grinder - have had a nice big burr and a Cuisinart with a removable basket that still made something of a mess before it stopped working (after five years of pretty reliable grinding), and I was ready to just order another Cuisinart...but people really really hate it, more than half the people who bought it dump on it, so I surfed around and was transfixed by all the favorable reviews of an absolutely unknown product by an absolutely unknown Chinese maker, which, who knows, may be the Dongmen Jiaoziguan or something like that. Anyway, this was inexpensive and worth a shot, and I needed it pretty quickly, and with Prime it was pretty quick to my door.

You'd think, this is just "hold the button down and voila! Ground coffee." No. I didn't read the instructions, I pushed the button like it was an old Braun or the Cuisinart, held it for a 20 count, and POOF! ... it absolutely incinerated the beans, burnt to death as though I'd thrown them into a blowtorch fire. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! Or, if you're reading this, you are now forewarned. This little Epica has a pretty powerful little motor - ignore the dartheads who gave it one star because the motor didn't work (they may not have pushed the button down far enough or seated the lid securely): send it back and get a replacement (or did yours "fall off a truck"?) - and you need to PULSE THE GRIND to a 4/4 beat of whole notes - press the button 1. 2. 3. 4. relax, press 1. 2. 3. 4. etc. until you get a grind you like. It's a pretty even grind for a blade grinder. No, you'll never get espresso dust, but you can get pretty close.
