This is the same stuff that is issued to military members in combat zones. I have never had to use it on a wound, but medics who have assure me that it works as advertised. I wish it was less expensive so it would be easier to include in first aid kits, but I think it is worth having at least one in the kit that you will be around most often in case of serious trauma.

Note that this is not for every-day injuries. If the wound will respond to direct pressure and normal bandages, use that. The QuikClot gauze is for traumatic woulds that will require a trip to the emergency room and need to be controlled *immediately*!

Hopefully, you will never have to use this, but this is EXACTLY what the military uses today.

I just deployed to Afghanistan and went through "first aid" training. The specifically focused part of the training on this gauze. We were shown a video of a live pig whose open gaping wound went straight to bone. The demostrator plugged the wound with this until it stopped bleeding. Horrific to watch, but effective.

If you dont know already, this gauze goes INTO the wound. You STUFF the open wound with this gauze with forearm length parts at a time until bleeding stops or you are out of gauze. THEN you apply a dressing over it and the wound to keep out infection etc.

Unfortunately, they have "life-spans" so keep this in mind. This is for SERIOUS wounds also keep that in mind.

This is definitely something you want to have in any First Aid Kit. I am a 3 year Army Combat Medic. I've used this stuff in Afghanistan. It is not for minor, veinous bleeding. It is for arterial bleeding, characterized by bright red, usually squirting, blood. It will definitely control any major hemorrhage. Yes it has an expiration date, but this is FDA mandated. It is still usable and effective after that date. I know in the Army, we use it beyond the expiration. This is the date it will begin to be less efficacious. Rest assured it will remain viable if it stays sealed and dry. Also, you only need one. Yes its 4 yards long, and most wounds will pack more that 4 yards of gauze, but you only need this on the actual bleeding vessel. Once you run out of QuikClot, use regular gauze or another absorbant material to ensure it is packed tight.

My Dad is an active handyman who has taken blood thinners for the last few years. The blood thinners must work very well, because every time he gets the smallest cut or scrape, the wound leaks for days--soaking through bandages, gauze pads sealed with tape, his clothing and everything else. As you can imagine, he finds this messy, tedious and irritating.

I bought this Combat Gauze for him to make into little bandages, and it has worked beautifully, perfectly! He is so pleased! It stops the bleeding in moments, and the bleeding does not resume when the bandage gets wet or needs to be changed! Finally, he can slap a small bandage on a minor cut and go about his business like normal. This stuff is great!

On a side note, I think that Combat Gauze would be good to have around in case one of us really cuts ourselves badly. Knock on wood and all that, but hey, it could happen, and if it did I'd be glad to have this in the medicine cabinet!

This is a great product provided the user is willing to learn about correct usage. It can be a life-saving product when used correctly, but prior to usage I think it is critical that people understand when this product should or should not be used (especially the "should not" portion.) These hemostats have historically been used in situations that were not appropriate and this can cause troubles of its own. This incorrect usage has resulted in some negative opinions toward the advanced hemostats, which I feel is undeserved if the criticism stems of incidents involving incorrect usage (with the makers are unable to control.) If the user is not already aware of and/or not willing to learn about the correct utilization of an advanced hemostat such as Combat Gauze, I would not recommend purchasing this product (or any hemostat) due to the risks that can stem from improper usage.

I store a pack of Combat Gauze (along with a pressure bandage, C.A.T., trauma pads, gauze wrap, gloves, and smelling sauce) at a few different places including my car, my kitchen, and my bedroom. These are smaller emergency kits designed specifically for severe hemorrhaging and packaged in a fashion that makes self-application easy by reducing the time it takes to get packages open. More or less, my goal is to have the tools I need to stop someone (including myself) from bleeding to death before I can get to the hospital. So one of those tools is a hemostat, and I think Combat Gauze is currently among the best of its type (based off of the testing literature I have personally come across.)

QuikClot improves hemostats with every generational advance of their products.
