I use bare "internal" hard drives in an external dock to do my backups, and swap the drive to an off-site location every week. I wanted a protective case to carry the bare drive in, and was surprised to find such a case difficult to find.

The ineo box looked like what I wanted, but it occurs to me that my intended use is probably not what ineo had in mind. The box is a simple plastic shell (as expected), and the only padding is two hard foam strips on either end that hold the hard drive in place. Outside of that, the drive rests against the bare plastic of the sides. ineo claims "anti-shock", but this case isn't going to provide much protection against impacts that aren't mostly to the end of the case. My guess is that it was intended to go no further than crossing the room from a machine to a storage cabinet.

Even so, it's still better than throwing a bare drive in my bag, keeping fingers and keys off of the drive itself. It does that job well enough that I bought a second one. For the price, the level of protection is not unreasonable.

UPDATE: I've been using these boxes to carry my backup hard drives off-site for five months now and they have performed the job as expected. I've not dropped a drive, but I carry it in my bag one day a week, and the cases are doing the job as expected.

UPDATE 2: (06/2011) I've now been using two of these boxes as indicated above for over 18 months. Still no complaints, and I've upgraded my rating from three to four stars. I've had no trouble with the drives that I transport in them. The hinges are not showing any signs of stress, though I've probably opened and closed them less than 100 times each.

The case was certainly nice to have when I was off work for two weeks and kept my offsite backup at my dad's... I was more comfortable handing him the drive in a sturdy case than just wrapped in an ESD bag.

This case fits the hard drive snugly, and it has small pads on either end to prevent the drive from rattling inside the box. Much cheaper than buying 2 USB enclosures.

I use 2 bare drives for backup, with a USB drive dock. I swap them between an offsite location monthly. This box is a great way to protect the drives during storage and transport.

I purchased these cases over a year ago and liked them. So when I was looking for more, I purchased them again. However, this time they broke a little over a month of occasional use. The latch on one case broke (so now I cannot keep it closed.) The other case has a broken hinge so the lid doesn't stay on at all. They seemed to have been made from inferior plastic.

I WOULD NOT BUY THESE AGAIN!

As noted in some other reviews, the case has a foam pad (the case I got only has a pad at one end rather than two) to make the drive fit snugly. This puts some pressure on the plastic latch. The first time I closed and opened the case with a drive inside, the plastic latch broke off as I was flexing it. I'm guessing that the same flimsy plastic would eventually cause the hinge to tear, but I won't (can't) be using it long enough to find out.

The other reviewer was right - this case IS very thin and not exactly sturdy. It's fine for storing your drives in it permanently and not move around much. But this case is not appropriate if you plan on moving your drives a lot. The padding inside is very good and keeps a generous space between the drives you put in, and it's a pretty snug fit, which is good. But the "metal" outer casing (feels like plastic) is pretty lame. Definitely not drop proof and not fire proof (not even a few minutes). For the price it's not really worth it.

I bought many of these in the past and was quite satisfied. HOWEVER, I ordered a number of cases again and the case is different now and no longer fits the hard drives. I was able to force a drive into the case and spent an hour removing it. I tried placing the drive in all different positions figuring I was doing something wrong, I was not.
I would steer clear of these cases, as they are to small for the drives they are supposedly made for. My question is didn't someone try to fit a drive into one of these?

**EDITING as Amazon is combining reviews for both the NC10 and NC25 containers.

Purchased 1 of each (NC10 & NC25) to test, and as noted to the manufacturer, there is much room for improvement. The cases are identical to each other, just with different foam inserts.

The case itself is a light weight material, with adequate foam protection, in the base, for contained drives. The NC10 lid however has minimal foam, and would not offer much protection for the drives if dropped. The NC25 variant has an additional foam insert in the lid that better protects the smaller drives.

When fully loaded, the NC10 plastic handle does show signs of strain where it is attached to the case lid, which would likely break over time with the higher usage we would intend it for. The NC25, having a lighter maximum load with the smaller drives, should hold up over time a bit better.

Both the lid hinges and clasps are of a cheaper material that would also likely not stand up to a higher usage scenario.

Instead of a flush mounted top handle, would rather have recessed handles on the top/sides. This would allow for a more secure handle attachment, as well as stacking for multiple units.

Overall, the NC10 may be acceptable to anyone that is looking for an inexpensive and minimal movement storage solution that does not stack, but is not suitable for those looking to have multiple units and/or higher movement scenarios. The NC25, may be more suitable for higher transport scenarios, but be attentive to the handle, hinge, and clasp wear and tear as they may deteriorate over time.
