I own two 2nd-generation Drobo 4-bay devices, and I've definitely had a love-hate relationship with them. Both Drobos had to be replaced at one point because of issues with the Firewire connections. Fortunately Drobo's customer service did a good job of working with me (the second time around at least), but it was still a frustrating experience.

The biggest problem by far though with the first two generations of Drobos, and a constant source of frustration for me, was the speed of the devices, or the lack thereof to be more precise. Both of my Drobos were ridiculously slow for both write and read speeds. I quickly realized I would only be able to use them for backup and storage of music, photos, and video footage (and NEVER for video editing), and cringed every time I had to make a large file transfer to or from my Drobos.

Then I got an e-mail a month ago from B&H offering me $50 off a new 3rd-generation Drobo (since I was a previous Drobo purchaser), with the new Drobo claiming to have a new architecture three times faster than the last generation. I of course scoffed at this, remembering claims of increased speed in the 2nd-generation upgrade with the new Firewire connection, which never even came close to reaching the full potential of Firewire speeds (in fact the Firewire connection on my devices never surpassed USB 2.0 speeds). At the same time, I will admit I was a bit curious about the claims, and very much wanting them to be true.

Size: Base Unit Verified Purchase
Update: Drobo finally confirmed both units were indeed faulty.
Completely unreliable and untimely support, plus only 90 day technical support, not 1 year. First off, I have been an IT professional for over two decades, and have personally set up and recommended many Drobos (from the standard Drobo to the Drobo Pro) for various businesses. The past Drobo units have worked exceptionally, but when I purchase the new Drobo 3rd generation for myself, it is nothing but failures.

The first unit would eventually be found to be dead on arrival. Out of the box it would refuse to connect, as other times it would connect, then disconnect randomly after a while. The same thing occurred on USB 3.0 as well as USB 2, and with different cables and USB 3.0 cards (as even Drobo says on their website it is picky in what USB 3.0 cards it likes). Even one card on their verified list was tried and had the exact same issues. Note that none of my other external drives, USB 3.0 or 2, had any such problems and always stayed connected. The Drobo even rejected a HDD I would later find was completely fine, passing all manufacturer's diagnostic tests and currently running flawlessly in another system. When the Drobo finally appeared to be running after many many hours of troubleshooting, data was copied to it. By the next day the Drobo drive was coming up as unformatted or showing as 'local disk', and even Drobo support verified all the data was gone and the only option was to reformat.

After much more troubleshooting with Drobo support over many days, they verified it was bad and I requested a brand new Drobo to be shipped to me overnight, which they did.

Hello Rasmussen,

Thank you so much for your feedback on Drobo a while back. We are disappointed to hear about your negative with our customer service over a year ago. You raise some valid points about Drobo and we would like to answer them. However, before we get to that we want to give you a bit of history on what has been going on at Drobo. The company was recently taken over by a new investor group and management team. The new CEO wrote a letter about that and its posted on the Drobo homepage if you are interested http://www.drobo.com/ceo-letter/. The change in mgmt/investors has also brought change in ways the company is managed.

Drobo's mission has and always will be to Preserve Simplicity. That mission is seen in the design of our products and software ...but it hasn't always been communicated clearly to customers.

Specifically, investments are being made to provide our customers with dramatically better "basic" support tools. Our view is most people who own a Drobo are able to navigate a searchable, well organized library of clearly written knowledge base articles about relevant & current topics.

Admittedly... we don't have that library right now. Our knowledge base is difficult to search (for technology architecture reasons) and many of the articles are dated. However, over the course of Q4 2015 and Q1 2016 we have been working hard to correct these problems. These is still lots of work left to be done but progress is happening at a rapid pace! In addition to writing numerous new knowledge base articles and clarifying/updating many others, Drobo is investing in a series of videos users can access to help them with specific snags they may have run into.

Alternatively, we know many of our customers may want or need to speak with a live person to help them out. We have made changes in how our phone support works and have more changes on the horizon.

While we are rapidly improving customer support, there is only so much we can do and only so fast we can move due to a number of contractual commitments and technology decisions that were made long before the current management team arrived. We strongly believe that when all the changes we have on our roadmap are implemented... Drobo's customer support (i.e. DroboCare) and our resource library will be yet another reason why customers choose Drobo!!

Thanks again for your posting of Drobo reviews. For now, we hope the above information is helpful as you think about the new efforts at Drobo and how we might be able to help you.

Regards,

Drobo Customer Service

I would give this one star, but I have to give their tech support some credit, even if the email, wait, email, wait, method of dealing with them was tedious and time consuming. (Edit: After 2.5+ days without a reply from their tech support, I'm not even giving them credit for decent tech support anymore, lowered rating to one star).

However, after sending me 3 different firmwares to install, my device is still not working.

My take on this, is that the concept is great, but their implementation is lacking in stability for most offices. Bought this for a client's office, to provide for some data redundancy. Initial setup was fine, and went smoothly. But after a brief power outage the day of install, the system went into a reboot loop that never stopped. Without the drives in it, the Drobo software could detect it, and was able to install the firmware, but with the drives (even fresh ones) it would not recognize it and would go into a reboot loop.

I just dont think there is enough quality assurance behind the product at this point, and I would not recommend it at this stage. I'm waiting to hear back from Drobo support one more time, but I've expressed an interested in RMA'ing to Amazon as defective at this stage.

EDIT: Each day I've sent in an email, and no reply from Drobo tech support in 72 hours now. I called in earlier this morning, and was assured that the person I needed to talk to would call me back, and 6 hours later, no call. I shouldn't be surprised based on my experience with their customer support.

I will never recommend or use a Drobo product after this. This was my first and last purchase, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the product, I understand sometimes defective units go out.
