First, I know this is Tom's Fluoride free toothpaste. That is why I bought it like I have been buying it. I don't want fluoride or any other harmful chemicals in the toothpaste I use. But guess what? Toms has sold out to the big manufacturers and corporations.

This is fluoride free toothpaste, but it contains other chemicals now that they don't tell you about, and didn't have before. I have never felt the need to post a review on amazon but this info needs to be spread. Shame on you Tom's of Maine!

1. Sorbitol - a naturally occurring substance in the body that is derived from fructose, and it is deadly to the cells within the body, according to Harvard grad Dr. Gabe Mirkin

2. Hydrated silica - is primarily used as an abrasive in toothpaste, is made from a crystallized compound found in quartz, sand, and flint. Tooth enamel re-mineralizes daily from the supply of ionic calcium and phosphorus in the saliva. Scratching the surface of the tooth with an abrasive such as hydrated silica harms the enamel and prevents re-mineralization, much like using sand to clean glass. Severe wear could eventually occur.

3. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - Perhaps the most dangerous ingredient in personal-care products is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). Because SLS has a foaming property, it is added to toothpastes in order to generate foam and give the impression that the toothpaste is working. However, SLS has been found to be quite corrosive and harmful to skin tissue says a report by the American College of Toxicity.

In the cleaning industry, SLS is used in products such as garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and car wash soaps. Elsewhere, SLS is used for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant.Read more ›

Tom's sold out to P&G, the colgate toothpaste owners, and have now added unnecessary chemicals to the product. I was so angry when I read the ingredients. Now I need to find a new toothpaste.

If you want a carcinogen in your toothpaste, this one is for you. After the brand was bought by a large corporation, they added sodium lauryl sulfate.

If I could give this zero stars, I would. I need a fluoride-free toothpaste because otherwise I have a skin reaction. I had trusted the Tom's brand name until now. The company now uses sodium lauryl sulfate, which is so much worse than fluoride. Come on! If I knew how to get my money back on this purchase, I would.

My second issue is that this stuff tastes so bad. My breath actually is worse AFTER brushing.

Keep looking... this isn't the right toothpaste for anyone.

My dentist referred this product to me due to problems with canker sores as a result of sodium lauryl sulfate in my toothpaste. I received it, started using it, and developed canker sores again. I checked the ingredients and to my surprise, this toothpaste has sodium lauryl sulfate in it.

I'm not sure how this product can brand itself as "natural toothpaste" and include ingredients that people like me have problems with.

Tom's of Maine, what happened to you? I bought your toothpaste for years and years for 2 equally important reasons: (1) you didn't test on animals, and (2) your toothpaste had a gentle flavor and didn't knock me over the head with a mint plant. This is not the toothpaste you used to make! This is terrible, it reminds me of Crest and Colgate and those other toothpastes I can't stand made by megacorporations that think we want our mouths STUFFED FULL OF MINT! Sorry, Tom, you've changed too much for me. I won't be buying your toothpaste again.

It's a shame. I grew up in Maine on Tom's toothpaste and now they all have garbage in it. SLS, carrageenan, etc. Carrageenan is linked to intestinal inflammation and cancer.

I couldn't believe it when I read the ingredients on this toothpaste... it has SODIUM LAUREL SULFATE, which is a toxic ingredient. Shame on "Tom's of Maine" for selling out and adding horrible ingredients like SLS! Will never buy their products again!
