Flavor Name: Grain Free Ocean Whitefish & Spinach RecipeDesign: Pate Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
A longtime friend, who happens to be a veterinary tech, disdains “supermarket” pet food as junk (meat byproducts and unhealthy stuff) and recommends the pricier Wellness brand for our cats, available at certain pet stores. We’ve used Wellness for many years. I got a 12-pack of Purina Beyond Ocean Whitefish & Spinach Recipe to see how our cats liked it, wondering if it might be a suitable alternative (and they DO like it). Both products are marketed as “natural” cat food, but Purina is available in supermarkets. A careful side-by-side comparison of ingredients reveals very little difference between the Wellness Turkey and Salmon product and the Purina Ocean Whitefish & Spinach. Both share 19 of the exact same ingredients (see list below).

The Wellness product lists 38 separate ingredients, the Purina product only 30. So what does Wellness offer that Purina does not? Sweet potatoes, squash, zucchini, cranberries, blueberries and ground flaxseed, among a few others. Those all sound wonderful to a health-conscious human, but I doubt they would ever be part of the natural diet of a feline.

Do those additions promote wellness in cats? My online search found data from a Dr. Debra Zoran, DVM, a vet writing in the JAVMA, and as paraphrased, her opinion is that “most of the relevant work seems to indicate that the nutrients found specifically in vegetables/fruits aren't digestible by cats, and the nutrients that they need are found in animal tissue (usually muscle or fatty tissue). So the inclusion of these ingredients in their food is not poisonous, but adds indigestible mass that they don't need.”

So should we switch to Purina, which doesn’t contain all those fruits and veggies? If cost were the only factor, the answer would be no.

Purina, it seems, is working very hard to overcome bad image problems dating back to their 1997 pet food recall, and in the last few years, have promoted various lines as natural and/or grain-free. Though really, grain-free should be a no-brainer; cats are carnivores.

Because of these problems, I read the ingredients very carefully, hoping to avoid anything that could possibly have consumed melamine before being made into pate: ocean whitefish, turkey, liver, fish broth, spinach, carrots, egg product, guar gum. It seems safe, with the possible exception of the turkey (and what is turkey doing in whitefish pate?!)(But then, what is guar gum doing there?)

It did make me very happy to know that I don't work in a cat food factory, whipping up pate with these ingredients for hours at a time.

Having determined that this was potentially safe, (and that this was not something I would EVER make myself), I fed it to my five cats.

Large-I-Will-Eat-Anything Cat gobbled it right up.

ADD-Suspicious Cat looked at it suspiciously, hid in the closet for two hours, and came back and ate whatever Large-I-Will-Eat-Anything Cat hadn't stolen from her bowl.

Sneaky Huntress Cat ate a little, went out and terrorized mice, returned and ate a little more, went out and terrorized more mice and a skunk, ate a little more, and went out and terrorized more mice.

Dainty Fluffball Kitty sat on her perch above the others and daintily nibbled hers until it was all gone.

Always Hungry Cat got on the counter while I was dishing it out and tried to snack on everyone else's so she'd have some of theirs and all of her own.

So in terms of consumption, it was four paws up.

Then I looked at the feeding instructions.

Please offer all varieties of the pate in this newest brand. I stumbled upon this new Purina canned cat food at Kroger, but I prefer to order on a subscription service with my Amazon Prime. I have 4 cats of varying age and digestive tolerances so I am really picky in feeding them healthy food without all the artificial ingredients and preservatives. I don't buy the versions with gravy because they would only eat the gravy and leave the food, but all of them loved the pate flavors. They also really like the dry versions of Beyond cat food.

I don't know why, but I have found it incredibly difficult to identify a wet cat food that (a) has acceptable ingredients, (b) is within my budget, and (c) my cats actually like. I know, I am probably too accommodating to their palates, but there it is. For reasons that probably don't need to be stated, I was hesitant to buy food from this company; however, the ingredients appear to be good, and the cats have eaten it willingly. They won't even eat fresh meat and fish, so that's saying something. Two out of three isn't too bad. The price is still more than I think is reasonable. It comes down to $7.60 a pound, which is more than I pay for meat for my own table. But on the whole, it's working for us. For what it's worth, only the "pate" style food seems to be palatable to my cats.

I was paying a lot for another high quality brand. Then I found this. I looked over the ingredients several times before I agreed this too is good cat food. No by products, no grains, no artificial colors or flavors. Less then what I was paying for the other brand plus I like having it delivered to my door.
