This record player is fantastic, the speakers built in it are amazing and it plays records very clearly. I highly recommend this machine if you are new to vinyl records or want a portable record player.

HOWEVER, I am giving this machine a four star rating because it required some tinkering before it could work properly. The turntable ran the records too slow so all of my music sounded like the devil trying to communicate with me. Fortunately enough, the probably could be solved with a Phillips screwdriver and a little technical know-how. All I had to do was loosen some screws near the motor and it worked perfectly after that.

The 5th star is because of its potential. Read on...

There are lots of reasons to like this turntable: Price, MP3 recording capability, included software, small size, portability, available in several colors, etc. For me, the biggest reason I chose this model over the others was a review written by Jordan or JThomas, a self-proclaimed vinyl junkie. Here's a guy who's used to playing his hundreds of pristine records on thousand dollar equipment, scrutinizing every beat and note in unadulterated analog splendor... And he's willing to use a machine that costs as little as a steak dinner. 'Nuff said. Admittedly, he had to make a few tweaks to his to get it to approach his standards, but he spells that out for all of us lay-people to benefit from in his review. If he doesn't already work for Sylvania's marketing department, he's got a fallback plan now for sure! The point is, by taking his advice, I'm getting great results from a VERY inexpensive and versatile turntable.

I bought the needles he recommends and made the speed adjustment. Now I can finally listen to the old, obscure Christmas records I've been collecting at garage sales and thrift stores all year. My wife and I get very nostalgic when we hear old Christmas music, and the static pops bring us right back to our childhoods... MERRY CHRISTMAS!

To clarify, it CAN run on 4 AA batteries, AND it can run on USB power. It connects to the computer using a common USB cable, just like your old printer. (or go get one for $0.99 at Good Will!) You can then plug the computer end of the cable into the plug part of your old phone or iPad charger. (If you actually have to go out and buy a power cable for this thing, it's because you saved THOU$ANDS of dollars by not buying ANY gadgets for the past 5 years!

My unit was missing the USB cable, but since I had a few extra laying around the house, it was no big deal for me. I have a few old vinyl LPs that I could not find CD or download replacements for, so I purchased this USB record player so I could capture the audio and save to MP3. For the price, it does the job. However, the description is a bit misleading. It says it takes the recording and "encodes" it - presumably to MP3. Well, not really unless you have the software necessary to encode it to MP3. You can use any such software like Audactiy that can capture off a USB audio input device. So, in Audacity is where you need to make sure you set it up to capture audio from the USB source. This can be confusing for those not experienced with Computer USB recording devices. Just keep in mind that the turntable is just acting as a player that feeds sound to your computer via the USB. You need to use your software to capture the sound played by the turntable. It's the software that actually has to encode the audio into a digital format such as MP3, AAC, or whatever your software supports.

That being said, it did the job for me/ I used Audacity to capture the audio. Just be sure to remove the plastic cover that is on the needle head which protects it. Some reviews have said that when they try to play a record, the arm just glides across the record and doesn't pick up anything. This might be because the person failed to remove the white plastic cap that protects the needle. The needle will be quite obvious to see if the cap is actually removed. The needle will not be seen or felt if the cap is on.

For the price, it did the job. If you have an expensive set of records you want to record, I would advise investing in a much more expensive unit.

Let me start off by saying I just discovered the flaw of this unit; the motor does not produce enough torque to properly spin higher-mass records. I guess that's what the adjusters are for ( two screw-cap potentiometers accessible from the bottom).

This is great for yard-sale finds, yester-year playback on the back porch, or to take with to a thrift store to pre-sample albums, but it just isn't up to snuff for proper playback.

I give it a "useful gadget, has potential, but don't get rid of your proper turntable yet."

I love this Turntable! It is small, cool looking, and plays flawlessly. I bought this after returning the Ion Lp Archive i purchased earlier from Amazon...which looked badass, but played like ass, skipping on almost all my records, especially my new ones. This Sylvania is great if you want neat, cheap, and flawlessness

(LATEST UPDATE: Don't bother reading my review below, it's a waste of time and money. This is basically a toy that will luckily last you a few months with occasional use. The speed does invariably change and becomes more than a nuisance to try and constantly adjust. I've taken these things apart and the insides are a joke, but what do you expect for the price. I bought three of these and all three had the same pitch problem.
Take my advice and and get a good starter table such as Audio Technica AT-LP60 Fully Automatic Belt Driven Turntable or the Audio Technica AT-LP60USB Fully Automatic Belt Driven Turntable with USB Port for recording your vinyl. Yes it's $100, but if you look into decent tables you will find it is quite inexpensive and at the price you won't find a better turntable, anything less, you will only be wasting money and time. Take it from someone who has deeply immersed himself into the vinyl world. If you want to check out a REAL turntable, click here Music Hall MMF-7.1 Turntable with Ortofon Mojo Cartridge.)

First let me start by saying, I am a vinyl junkie. I just turned 33 this June and starting to feel old lol, but I remember having records as a kid and I was always mesmerized by just watching the records spin as they played and loved listening to all my parents 60s rock and 80s country.
