If you want near top i7 without video chip and with less TDP – buy this one.

Just be careful – it could require BIOS update for old MB chips and revisions (or you won't be able to start your PC). Always check MB specs for supported CPU and what BIOS version it requires. For example most of B85 doesn't support it w/o update.

If you want to avoid any BIOS issues try E3-1230V3 or E3-1240V3 instead.

I've done my fair share of builds, and I always try to find a good bang for the buck. I almost exclusively did AMD builds up and to a MAME machine I did which I needed less threads and higher IPC, so I did a dual core Intel Pentium G3220. I was amazed by that CPU, so I gave up on AMD (at least until they can release something semi-competitive to the IPC of the Sandy Bridge + core architecture). I also had a hard time not having 8 threads, since this is replacing a sandy bridge laptop with an i7. I got used to having 8 CPU graphs :-), so no i5 for me.

This product is the BOX, not just a tray CPU, so you do get the stock cooler and Xeon sticker (FTW!).

This CPU, as noted is basically an i7-4770 with a slightly lower turbo (3.8 rather than 3.9 GHz). Sure, I could have gone with a 4GHz i7, but the lower TDP, combined with a much lower price (about $60 less than the 4770) make this a great CPU for the price. Don't get this CPU if you want to use 'on-board' graphics, as for Intel boards it uses the iGPU, which this CPU does not include. But for the gamer who doesn't care about overclocking this is a great value.

I'm using the stock cooler, which during winter months with lower ambient temps may be fine. Under load the CPU has hit 75C. Time will tell when ambient temps go up whether or not I will swap the heatsink out to something more potent, but for now it will be fine. This CPU is fast, and super capable. I'm using a GTX 970 with it and it certainly keeps the GPU fed.

Wonderful CPU. I upgraded from an i3 4130 to this and have received much better frame rates across the board in newer games as they all are starting to take advantage of multiple cores and threads. If you do not plan on overclocking then this chip would be the way to go for the most bang for your buck. If you do plan on overclocking I suggest going the i5 route instead though as Xeon's can't truly be overclocked.

This Xeon processor worked flawlessly out the box. $50 dollars cheaper than the i7 4790 that it is the equivalent of. I didn't need the built in GPU so I went this route instead. Runs cooler than core i7 and consumes less power for the same compute performance if you use a dedicated GPU. I wouldn't recommend paying more for the slightly higher clocked Xeon's as this one is the best bang for the buck.

Be careful, the E3-1220v3 is actually a core i5 equivalent and doesn't have 8 logical cores. Also, the variants that end in a "5" (E3-1245v3) have built in GPU's which is why they cost more. Stick with the variants that end in 1 or 0 if you don't need a built in GPU.

Stock cooler temps in open air are 38C idle and about 70C load. The cooler fan is completely silent as far as I can tell. This is a mini itx setup with passive cooling other than the stock cpu cooler. I used the stock paste. Not too shabby. Might add a fan or two just to see if that lowers the load temps.

This processor allows me to get everything done with one machine. I am not a person who wants to overclock everything in my machine, (that's why I didn't go with an I-series chip) I just want something reliable and powerful out of the box without breaking the bank.

I ordered this a few days ago before Christmas for my first pc build(gaming pc specifically). I had no issues installing this onto my motherboard. It worked first time flawlessly.

As others have stated this is best bang for buck Intel processor you can get in this price range. This does not come with integrated graphics, which is fine with me because I bought an amd graphics card(r9 380). Keep in mind that since it does not come with integrated graphics you will not be able to use your motherboards video ports(hdmi, vga, displayport, etc ). So take that into consideration before buying.

It cannot be overclocked but I'm not into that sort of thing. It comes with its own stock cooler, which runs surprisingly quiet yet efficient at cooling. I have been gaming some games that are not optimized well so they use more power from both the cpu and gpu than needed. It has never gotten hot while playing any of my games so far and remained cool.

Ive included a screenshot of cpu-z info on the processor as I type this, for those who care about specifics
