Does the job. adapts our M2 SSD to a SATA port used for drive cloning. We noticed that you cannot use a hard drive cloning dock to go from one M2(through this adapter) to another M2(through this adapter). We found that this is true of other brands so not just this one.

Best part of this is that it doesn't emulate the SSD. Your brand and model will appear in the devices or lspci for linux. Great!

It's built upside down!

That is, this PCB must be mounted to a 2.5" carrier tray so that the M.2 and mSATA connectors are on the bottom, facing the tray. This would be fine, except two problems: 1) the mSATA connector is too tall and places undue force on the SATA connectors on the tray; and 2) this will trap the heat of the M.2 / mSATA device between two PCB's - and these devices can run very hot, even when in free air.

Additionally, the mounting holes on this are not in the standard position for 2.5" drives, so most carriers don't seem to offer any screw positions that work.

This will only work acceptably well on a 2.5" carrier that is fully open on the bottom, other then the mounting tabs / holes - good luck finding one of those. (They do exist, though.) Definitely not suitable for the vast majority of 2.5" carriers / external enclosures.

Like others have pointed out, this adapter has a couple of serious issues:

1. The M.2 connector is mounted upside down. This in itself would have been ok for me since all I want to do is image a Samsung 950 Pro but it could lead to a potential heat problem if you plan to use it mounted full time.

2. The real serious problem is a Samsung 950 Pro won't even fit into the slot. The slot on the adapter is too narrow. You might be able to force it hard enough to go in but I would never dream of doing that with a $330 SSD.

Very disappointed. I need to image my boot drive and TI2016 can't do that with the 950 Pro mounted in my system's M.2 slot.

I needed this adapter to upgrade Laptops. I used it for my Lenovo Carbon X1 which has an M.2 disc and for my Samsung Slate which has a mSATA drive. Both drives operated without problems. Since I just used this for cloning my hard drives I did not pay attention to performance.

This saved me when I had an mSATA drive intermittently go into latchup (those who do chips and know about body SCRs know what I mean) in an important machine. I was able to use this to catch it working momentarily and grab a copy off to a non-defective drive (on another machine) for later restoration to a new mSATA drive. I've also used it with a .m2 drive for a newer Intel NUC with good results, using a Star Tech USB<>SATA cable in all cases. A nice thing to have in the box of tricks.

Simple and perfect. I used two of these to copy the contents of an mSATA drive to an m2 drive via a hard drive duplicator. It worked great and they have proved to be an important part of a technician's toolkit. To be crystal clear: this board can hold an mSATA OR m2 drive - not both at the same time. Comes with all the hardware you need to adapt for half height mSATA and any of the m2 lengths. Highly recommended.

The mSATA and M.2 connectors attach to what would be the bottom of a hard drive. This means that if you try to insert this drive into an external 2.5 inch adapter, the attached SSD's will be pressing against the bottom.

I don't know what the manufacturers are thinking. Most of the M.2 and mSATA adapters have this problem. The only one I could find that would put the SSD on the "top" of the board was the Syba 70mm mSATA SSD to 2.5-Inch SATA Converter Adapter SI-ADA40067. If you look closely at the picture of that adapter and this one, you'll see what I mean.

I intended to use this adapter in an external 2.5 inch enclosure but since the SSD is on the bottom, they push the card up at an angle. Also, the mounting holes don't line up to the standard 2.5 inch hard drive. If you just want to lay this card on your counter top or let it dangle in your computer case, it might be fine but if you want to secure it, find a different card.

The sad thing is that it would have been simple to put the connector on the correct side and put the mounting holes in the right place. Someone was smart enough to understand the electronics and make the adapter but not smart enough to lay it out correctly. Strange.

I have purchased the below adapters – understanding there is some risk since the product description did say «M.2» but did not specify which Key.

ZTC-AD002 (G212503 Rev. 1.2; UPC 700115306744)
ZTC-EN005 (G212506 Rev. 1.0; UPC 700115306805)
ZTC-EN006 (G212505 Rev. 1.1; UPC 700115306829)

Now, my intended use was to fit Samsiung’s SM951 driveSamsung SM951 512GB M.2 80mm PCIe 3.0 x 4 Internal Solid State Drive MZHPV512HDGL-00000 in those – which has «Key M» connector. Now that I received all three above, I see on the boxes they do say «Key B». Beware!

Edit from 2016-04-05 after reply from Sam in the seller's customer support: "The problem you are having is not how it is keyed but the type of the interface. The SSD model in question which is the Samsung SM951 has a PCIe interface and not SATA. There are 2 types of M.2 NFGG SSDs in the market. The most common one is the SATA and that is what the enclosure is compatible with. The other SSD Type which is what you own and is not compatible with this enclosure is the PCIe." (excerpt).

Since this is my fault (or rather lack of knowledge and checking before buying), I am changing the rating to five stars.
