Hi folks. I wanted to address a few comments written about this review and then add a couple of updates.

We did receive a new extruder within a few after this was written. Since then we haven't had much to print on it until the last 3 weeks or so, when we've been printing a fair few parts. The printhead now doesn't really particularly jam, but it does air print or fail to print, probably around 50% of the time. This particularly true of black-PLA (we use only MakerBot PLA). So needless to say we're still pretty disappointed.

However what's even more unpleasant (and please feel free to correct me if I am wrong in my understanding). We've gotten some updates from the generic Makerbot e-mail service. First it appears that the 'extruder that jams' is no longer considered a factory defect. If you would like a replacement, you must either purchase one, or keep up with MakerBot support. Furthermore, MakerBot and their website are now recommending that you order and EXTRA extruder head...just in case... They say that the extruder head wears out, which I find odd, because my PrintrBot Simple has printed quite a bit and it has shown no sign of wear. As a Mechanical Engineer, I think I might be a bit more upset about this than most people. I'm sure the folks that work there have been working very hard to produce a good product, but to me the release of a product with such substantial performance issues speaks to a management which pushes deadlines instead of quality. Unfortunately, I think the only people that truly lose on something like that are the consumers.

Again, I've said it before, but company or individual, if you're looking for an inexpensive, reliable, and simple to operate 3D Printer, please look elsewhere.Read more ›

This purchase was a complete disaster, and I've chalked it up to a loss at this point. The printer never quite worked properly, but became totally unusable after a few days. The temperature would spontaneously drop to the point where prints would abort, the print head would bump into the table to due to firmware bugs and completely non-functional assisted leveling, the print quality was awful, and the extruder would make ugly sounding noises. After the slowest customer service experience I've ever had (and I'm a Comcast customer...) they agreed to replace the extruder.

With the replacement extruder, the print quality is still terrible, the ugly noise persists, and they've simply locked the software at a lower temperature to avoid the low temperature cutoff. And customer service is ignoring my emails... probably because they're being inundated by support requests from people with the same problems.

Buy something else. Anything else. Get a toaster - it will 3D print better than this.

I have a two year old Replicator 2 which has served me well; not without issues with the feeder and some Makerware hiccups- but overall it has been very solid. With almost 1000 hrs of print time, it seemed like a good time to look for its replacement, since I assumed technology has advanced. While reading the reviews of the Makerbot 5th gen, a very disturbing trend emerged. One third of the five star reviews occurred on just a single day (10/14/2014)- while not one day of one-star reviews- of which there are twice as many- had two reviews. Similarly, the positive reviews were brief, and often by Amazon users with no or very few other reviews, opposite of the one star reviews. I created a chart (hopefully it makes it through) to show the distribution of 1 and 5 star reviews by date- it speaks for itself. Draw your own conclusions- but I'm staying clear of this product.

UPDATE: I initially only looked at five-star reviews for "tampering"- but the four-stars are off as well. 3 of the 8 four-star reviews were done on Oct 22nd (the same day as two five-stars), and 1 of the 8 four-stars was on the same day as the ridiculous "big day" (Oct 14th, 2014) for five-star reviews. That almost definitely makes many (most?) positive reviews false. If the suspicious four and five star reviews are discounted, the 5th Gen gets a total score of around 1.6 stars (vice 2.36, as of Feb 15, 20015). Most seasoned Amazon shoppers would not buy an very expensive product with lots of detailed reviews averaging less than two stars- thus the tampering.

We purchased this printer at the end of May. The biggest problem with this printer is the smart extruder. We change filament very often to different colors. The smart extruder kept clogging up and stopped printing. Calling support will get you a new extruder replacement but it will be a week of down time.

We returned this printer after the second extruder jammed. I suggest looking into the Replicator 2. The older extruder in that model is at least self serviceable when jams occur.

We had the same issue with the extruders as another poster, except after the 3rd we returned the whole thing as I didn't think it's going to get any better soon.

Ours arrived DOA with a bad extruder, which attempted to drive itself into the glass build platform. 2nd extruder lasted 2 prints, then jammed. Unlike the previous generations, these extruders are not customer serviceable, so we couldn't take it apart and fix it like the older models without voiding the warranty. Instead, wait for another unit, which never came. Gave up after 2 weeks and no ETA from Makerbot support on when we'd ever see this thing print. They couldn't even give us an ETA on the replacement, so it sounds like it's a much larger issue than just a few bad units.

We have a Replicator 2 and the original Replicator, so we knew the frustrations of 3D printing well - thankfully I didn't sell the 2 yet as it's back in workhorse mode as we search for something better.

** Update June 11/2015 **
Makerbot followed up with me about a month ago with a 5th Gen unit on eval. This time it was a much better experience, as it seems the issues with the Smart Extruders have been resolved. We also started using Simplify3D (which is $149) to do the slicing/gcode generation, and the results have been much better. Going to hang onto this one and see how it holds up.
