I wanted to love you, I did! I did! And there are many things to love about you! You are so hot! You toast my buns so nicely! MMmm!

Okay, but no, really, even though after a million bajillion uses our cuisinart panini press is limping along with a screw jimmied through the handle in one place where I got a little enthusiastic and pressed down too hard and one side couldn't take it anymore- the Cuisinart kicks this guys butt.

First, the plates pop off for cleaning. Second, I usually do not end up with a massive puddle just waiting to turn into a grease fire underneath the thing when I am done. This just doesn't have the heft the Cuisinart has and at this price point, why not bump up a bit and get the Cuisinart which will last forever even if you drop it on your granite floor, cook 80 million sandwiches in it, etc.. Or if you want something that will make a panini and don't mind the clean up, go cheaper with something that gets good reviews. Procter Silex talks this one up but most of what they say can be said of any panini press.

I do like that this one opens wide and can accommodate several sandwiches- but there are drawbacks there, too. Longevity will be shortened if you don't remember to always start from the middle before you do your pressing- especially if you are using the 'big mouth' option. Personally, I think you can find better options out there though I'd take this one for free. :)

Panini are the perfect sandwich, in my humble opinion. We've had a Waring model for years, and after many a delicious sandwich, it finally gave up the ghost. The Proctor Silex model didn't feel as substantial to me on pulling it out of the box, but it's a fraction of the cost. I gave the plates a quick clean, laid out my sandwich, heated it up and gave it a go.
On the plus side, the plates are huge, far bigger than my Waring. I can actually make the whole family panini in one fell swoop, a feature I absolutely love. The tilt of the plates also works very well, allowing you to set the top plate right on top of the panini, letting it cook flat and even, even if you over-stuff the sandwich a bit (sometimes people just need extra onion, it's a known fact). I also like that you can store it upright. It is bigger than my previous model and takes up more counter space, but it tucks into the cabinet very well. I've also made quesadillas with this press, and those turned out very well. Even with the thin tortillas, the plates come down flat for cooking without a gap, so they cooked evenly and had a good crisp.
On the con side, the entire surface heats very quickly. There isn't much you can touch on this once it's heated, and I'd recommend using gloves or a hot pad to open the press when your sandwich is done.
All in all, a very nice unit, and I can foresee many more delicious panini in my future.

One of our favorite kitchen appliances is a Cuisinart GR-1 Griddler Panini and Sandwich Press that we use regularly to make great grilled sandwiches. In most ways, it's an excellent panini press, so it's what I'm comparing the Proctor Silex against. The Proctor Silex has several features that we liked:
* The grooved plates give sandwiches the distinctive grill marks of a real panini sandwich. The plates are not removable, however, so they're not ideal for some foods like quesadillas.
* A "floating head" design that allows the top plate to self-level when in contact with the food, which reduces the tendency to displace the sandwich contents, and improves the heated contact between the top and bottom plates. Our Cuisinart has this design too, but the Proctor Silex also has a cover lock that lets you fix the heated top plate at a given height above the food. This is an invaluable feature for making pizzas or open-face sandwiches. For regular sandwiches, it lets you maintain an even pressure on the sandwich without having to keep pressing the top plate down.
* The panini press draws 1200 watts. That's enough power to heat both plates adequately to toast your bread and melt cheese in your sandwiches. (By comparison, our slightly smaller Cuisinart draws 1,000 watts.)
* The Proctor Silex is substantially larger than our old Cuisinart, which has 11"x7" plates. The larger plates make a big difference in the size of the sandwiches you can grill or the number of sandwiches.
* The Proctor Silex can be stored vertically, which takes up less countertop space. Our Cuisinart won't do that.

I really enjoyed using the Proctor Silex Panini Press. It heated up quickly, even before I had my sandwich ingredients ready. The heating elements in both plates makes the sandwich cook in half the time vs a stove top. I used extra thick, Italian bread slices with roasted peppers, onions and provolone. The floating top allows nearly limitless choices in thickness of your beads and the size of the Panini. This is a machine Dagwood would have loved. I have the Delonghi Panini Press as well and this product is just as good quality with the floating top but the Delonghi has a size limit. The unique turn lock on the side allows the unit to stay all the way open while keep the lid perfectly flat. My only complaint is the outside top gets very hot due to the heating element but there is a warning. It would be excellent for kids to make their own Paninis if you have them wear oven mitts.
The machine feels very well made, has the unique option of grilling with the lid open and heats very fast. I highly recommend.
