After my excellent experience with the Buffalo SNES reproduction pad, I soon set my eyes on a controller that emulated the control pad of my first video game system, the Sega Mega Drive (or the Sega Genesis, to those of us in the USA). I was initially playing MD games with a Model 2 Sega Saturn pad, via USB adapter, but I decided I wanted something a little closer to the original experience.

If you search on Amazon.com, you'll find at least five different companies (Tomee, Gtron, Retro Link etc) making USB pads emulating the Mega Drive Six Button controller. Most of them are modeled off the original smaller Japanese Six Button Pad (SJ-6000), which was released when Sega introduced the Mega Drive 2 in 1993. I personally haven't tried these pads, but the reviews speak for themselves. Cheap plastic, breaks easily, bad drivers... the list goes on. Enter Hyperkin to set things right.

This USB controller is modeled after the larger US/EU version of the Six Button Arcade Pad (MK-1653), made for larger Gorilla-sized Western hands. Originally released to coincide with the release of games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, the controller adds three new face buttons (X, Y, Z) to the original three triggers (A, B, C). The Start button was also moved to the centre of the controller, and a Mode button was added onto the top as a way to make the Six Button Pad fully compatible with 99% of Mega Drive games. I personally would have preferred a controller that emulated the original three button Mega Drive Control Pad (SJ-3500/MK-1650), but that's what I grew up with, so I would say that.

Sturdy materials and good quality. This controller works great and does not squeak or anything. It's also very responsive.

I should note that I did buy this to use with EmulationStation running on a Raspberry Pi. While the controller did work for the most part, it didn't map everything correctly. I think this is more of a software issue, as RetroArch is really geared toward the six-axis four button controllers. While I could map the A,B,C buttons, I never did figure out how to get the X,Y,Z working. It's also lacking some of the other buttons that would make this useful for a pi (select, L1, R1). Overall I'm not going to let this affect my review of the product since the controller itself is great. Just a warning for anyone looking to use this with their Pi.

Simply put, this is a perfect Genesis controller. Immediately recognized when plugged in via usb, very easy to program into your Genesis emulator of choice (I like Fusion with the scan lines added) and the buttons are very responsive. I couldn't recommend it more!

I wanted to like this... the buttons feel pretty good, and the overall sense is very similar to a real Sega 6-button pad. The issue here is the D-Pad. The "up" direction on mine fails to register unless you press incredibly hard; harder than you would ever naturally press. As any gaming connoisseur knows, inconsistent controls instantly ruin a game, thus this controller is useless. I will be sticking with the amazing "Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad for PC" controllers.

the controller's quality is awesome and it feels like an actual SEGA genesis controller, although the d-pad is a little clunky especially when moving diagonally there is some delay, but nothing too series. So all I can say is it worth the buying.

Absolutely the best USB Genesis controller on the market. I can't find a single problem with it...It feels exactly like the original Sega 6-button controller, including the start button and even the "mode" button on the top right.

You MUST get this if you plan on using any Sega Master System or Sega Genesis emulator on your computer....You'll be transported back to your childhood in no time flat...
