Initial Review upon 4 days of use:
I went through 3 different Laptops in search of my new Notebook PC (to replace a great Dell Inspiron that I have had for 5 years).

So, first question: Why not go with another Dell?
First, Dell has been slipping lately in Customer Satisfaction. But more importantly, I was looking for a convertible notebook... something that could flip completely around and allow tablet-like operation. At present, Dell does not have a good one of those that I am aware of.

ASUS has been creating great laptops for the last many years and they keep getting better, so I had to look at ASUS in my selection process. I also looked at 4 other notebooks in my process (5 if you count the Flex).

Before the ASUS:
First I looked at an i7 Sony FIT, just because it was a great price and better specs. My judgement after a week of use: Let's just say no...nothing seemed to work right with this laptop... and since it was not a convertible (2-in-1) I moved past it quickly, despite the great price for the i7. The performance was sub par and useability terrible.

Next, I seriously considered the Lenovo Flex. You can get some great deals on the Flex, and it is a well made, beautiful and powerful line. Only problem? It FLEXES only so far... so it can NOT fold back on itself... one option I really wanted for my unique needs. I just don't see the benefit of a 270 degree flexible PC. I played with a friends, was impressed, but it gave me no benefit and was not a true convertible.

Third, I purchased the Sony Vaio Flip... a great little 14 inch wonder that is sleek, gorgeous, and utterly unremarkable in performance. The "flip" mechanism was super neat, and shows great design. People commented on the design and beauty.

Asus has done a pretty good job of taking everything good about an ultrabook and a tablet while leaving behind most of the bad things. If you were looking around for a crazy-thin ultrabook, do yourself a favor and take a look at one the Asus TP500 models (currently there are three). For most people they make more sense.

Why? Well once people get past the "ooh that's cool" part of owning an ultrabook, they start getting annoyed that they have no DVD drive, can't plug in a network or HDMI cable without an adapter, a scaled down keyboard and not enough USB ports. With the TP500's Asus has given you an extremely thin laptop but the only thing they sacrificed is the DVD player. Something most of us can live without thanks to the prevalence of digital media from Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and others. I previously had an Asus Zenbook, and I can think of no computer I hated as deeply. It was incredibly thin and feather light, but it might as well been a doorstop for all the good it did me. It was just too slow with throttled graphics (because there was no room for a fan) and nowhere to connect anything. When I first picked this Flipbook and saw how they had oh-so-carefully bumped out the bevel in one spot to make room for a RJ45 LAN port, my faith in Asus was restored.

Okay so who should buy one? Well this is an excellent laptop for home or school use, as long as you don't have big expectations about playing high-end 3D games. Being able to flip it over into pure-tablet mode is really nice when you just want to relax on the couch. It automatically detects which mode you are in (tablet or notebook) and disables the keyboard and touch pad. There are few things to love about Windows 8, but for tablet use, the "Metro" interface is pretty nice. And with Windows 8.

Plan to write a more detailed review later, but for now: this Asus Transformer shines in many respects -- easy setup, nice keyboard and display, solid, good overall functionality. But. Don't plan on streaming unless you're in the same room as your router (or at most the one adjoining it). 30 mbps drops to less than 0.5 mbps after about 20-25 linear feet (plus sheetrock), despite signal strength of 3-4 bars. Benchmarked Asus against a 7-year-old Lenovo laptop (Vista OS) in son's bedroom, where this PC will mostly reside. New Asus = 0.2 mbps. Old Lenovo = 9 mbps.

As for Microsoft's vaunted "Signature Service" for new PCs: called, put on hold (15 minutes), eventually dumped into voicemail, instructed to leave message for callback -- which I did -- and, 40 hours later, still no callback. I hope to come back to this review and report better results, but we'll see.

Update 8/25: Finally connected with Microsoft Signature Support -- did I mention I bought this device from online MS store for a little less than Amazon? -- and was told, after diagnostics and driver update (no improvement), that this is a known issue with the installed wireless adapter. The TP500LA comes with either a Broadcomm or Mediatek adapter (no way to tell which until it's out of the box). The Mediatek, which we have, is bad. Asus denied knowledge of the issue when I called, but MS guys were upfront about it and said they are seeking a resolution with Asus. Credit to them. I am proceeding with an exchange and hoping for the best. We like this unit in all other respects. But check which card you have and perform a speed test in different parts of your house. It is shockingly slow (< 0.5 mbps) when not in same room as router.

Update 8/26: Returned and reordered today.
