Four Different people, all find themselves on the same rooftop, with the idea of ending it all by jumping...you wouldn't think it lends itself to comedy, but Its the Honesty that draws you in and makes you smile..Imogen Poots has a Joi de Vive, and a foul mouth,..that is hard to ignore,..i found myself rooting for these people. excellent acting that was so seemless, i forgot they were acting and it really felt like i was following these people around..and liking it. Its not a long film..i think its just over 90 minutes..but they manage to give you feeling of completeness as to why and how these people got to where they were...not to give to much away, but by the end of the movie, it leaves you feeling good,....and maybe wanting to be a little nicer.

I saw the previews at the local theatre. Then saw it advertised here on Amazon and took a chance. Wow I am impressed. It contains NO CGI, NO exploding buildings, NO alien attacks, NO talking robots, NO end of the world stuff, NO dinosaurs and NO collapsing government plots and yet was probably the most enjoyable movie I have seen in a long time. Plot was a little shaky to start but not once was I bored or disappointed with it. Both Pierce Brosnan and Aaron Paul were memorable in their respected parts but Toni Collette(Maureen) was outstanding. The real scene stealer is Imogen Poots (Jess) with a truly remarkable part. If nothing else, this movie was easy on the eyes and ears. So get your popcorn ready and enjoy!

On New Years Eve, four people bump into each on top of a popular suicide building with the intent of jumping.

Martin Sharp (Pierce Brosnan) was a popular morning show host with a family. He fell from grace because "she looked like she was 25."

Maureen (Toni Collette) is a rather mousey person who has never lived life. She cares for an invalid son who she deeply loves.

Jess (Imogen Poots) is the daughter of a rich politician. Her sister Jennifer, who read on a book on invisibility, ironically went missing two years ago. She is currently mad at her boyfriend who dumped her.

JJ (Aaron Paul) Is an American who was part of an amateur band. He claims he has CCR brain cancer.

The press has found out about the suicide attempts as they gain their 15 minutes of fame. They in turn form a bond and become their own support group.

This is another Magnolia "feel good" about yourself film. If you have seen one before, you know the feeling. Typically, the film has light quirky comedy, a few messages about life you can take with you, and decent acting and directing. Rosamund Pike has a role smaller than her billing.

Very hard to stomach dramedy about four mismatched souls who meet on New Year's Eve on the top of a building that is a popular suicide spot--instead of killing themselves they become intertwined in each other's lives in ways that are never completely believable. When you use a four person suicide attempt as a cute meet you are starting off in a rather deep hole and A Long Way Down never finds its way out.

Imogen Poots plays the most annoying stereotype in modern romantic comedies--the manic dream pixie girl but in this case with suicidal thrown in. She's a charming enough actress that her ludicrously conceived character is mostly likable. Pierce Brosnan plays the one with the most believable reason for committing suicide--he was a morning show television personality who slept with a girl he thought was 25 but she was much younger. He lost his job and his family and was sent to prison for a year. Even though on paper Pierce Brosnan's character has a perfectly believable reason for being suicidal Brosnan never comes close to expressing any real pain on screen so his motives never feels genuine.

Toni Colette plays the single mother of a severely disabled boy--she gets the pain right but is so attached to her son that it's difficult to believe she would kill herself and leave him in the care of strangers. Then there's Aaron Paul as JJ, a character who can't even come up with a reason for wanting to die so he pretends that he's dying of cancer.Read more ›

The films based on Nick Hornby novels focus on people who are at life's crossroads who, while not realizing closure to life's problems, achieve some sort of epiphany. The best of the Hornby screen adaptations would be the British "Fever Pitch" with Colin Firth and "About a Boy". Though not on the level of those films "A Long Way Down" is not without merit. It's about four strangers who attempt suicide on New Year's Eve who make a pact to wait until Valentine's Day to see if they change their collective minds. When that time comes will their problems be solved and if not will they find a reason to live regardless? Stars Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, and Aaron Paul carefully etch out flawed but sympathetic characters. Their imperfections make you all the more want to root for them. A film that offers food for thought about the fragility of the human condition.
