The BISSELL BOLT ION PLUS 2-in-1 Lightweight Cordless Vacuum (18V) has a lot of nice design features, but also a few design and advertising flaws that prevent it from a 5-star rating.

For starters, the Bolt Ion Plus is pitched as a cordless vacuum. I feel that is a little misleading. This device clearly falls into the “electric broom” or “hard floor vacuum” category. In the pictures on the box you see a person using it on hardwood floors, or with the extend-O attachment to vacuum walls and ceilings. There is one picture (it’s on the box, too) where the person is on a low pile carpet with the unit, but if you look that’s only to remove the hand-held vac. I tried to vacuum some low pile carpet and it’s nearly impossible to use because there is too much resistance to move it back and forth, and I’m worried that I’ll break the brush head. You can use it in a pinch for an area rug on your hardwood floor, but even 6’ x 8’ rugs pose a challenge for this Bissell. If you are thinking about buying this “cordless vacuum” to also vacuum even one carpeted room…don’t.

As for the good things, there are several. First, I like the charging base. The vac stick sits on there and makes good contact with the base, and small blue LED lights indicate that it’s charging. The only minor negative is that the attachments do not all fit on the base. The battery has great runtime. I’ve used it for 15-25 minutes at a time and it has never died on me. It should be more than enough juice to clean all of the hard floors in most houses. The stick also has a button that makes the handle kink, so it can maneuver under tables and chairs. It works pretty well, but the light weight distribution of the brush head area prevents you from having perfect directional control.Read more ›

I own several Bissell products; however they tend to be carpet cleaners. This is my first Bissell vacuum. In the past, I have owned vacuums made by Hoover, Oreck, Dyson, and Panasonic (Kenmore).

This is also my first cordless vacuum. I was a bit skeptical that a battery-powered vacuum would perform well for normal cleaning. Overall, I can tell you, this vacuum is certainly strong enough to do my whole house, which includes wall-to-wall in a living room, dining room, hallway, family room, den, and basement. It easily picks up dirt and even my dog’s shedded fur (a large Golden Retriever, so I am talking about tumbleweeds).

What’s in the box?
• The Bolt Ion vacuum (model #13121)
• Detachable sweeper
• Charging Base
• AC Adapter
• Crevice tool with built-in dusting brush
• Upholstery tool
• Extension Wand (2 piece)
• User guide

The accessories are made to be used when the Bolt is in “Hand Vac” mode. The “sweeper” head of the vacuum, the part which you roll across the floor) detaches so that the Bolt can be used as an upright or a hand vac.

TIP: like most vacuum makers, Bissell does not provide a set storage spot for the accessories. You can fit just one on the charging base, and it’s one of the smaller ones, the crevice tool. The others have no on-board storage. So save one of the longer plastic bags when you open the Bolt and you can throw the accessories in the bag and put them in a closet.

Out of the box, assembly is required, but no tools are needed. You can probably do all of this without opening the user guide.
You snap together the two pieces of the charging base and snap the sweeper head onto the Bolt. That’s it!Read more ›

I was looking for a small, cordless vaccuum (Bolt is small) that had a longer charge than the cordless Dyson (I have the Dyson whose charge lasts about 15 minutes).

The reviews for the Bolt were really good, so I ordered the newest, most powerful. However, it's a big disappointment. A less powerful model of the Bolt had great ratings (reviewers must not have had much to compare with), but they sure don't hold true for this vac. First, the dust cup is practically miniscule. I dumped out about 4 ounces (half a measuring cup) of debris, because it was enough to block the flap.

Even empty, it's not powerful enough to pick up up small bits like stray Christmas tree needles (I'm referring to a single needle), or small bits of sand/gravel/grit the size of a hole in a leather belt buckle. My Dyson would immediately suck these up, but the Bolt does not, even with repeated passes.

I'm very unhappy with the purchase because it was expensive (price listed on Amazon is $229.99), and it's a glorified dustbuster, on which I've now wasted a chunk of money.

I've given it one star because the "powerbrush" does brush nicely. If only there were some kind of suction power!

I'd give this 10 stars if I could. NO CORD!!! So much better than dust mopping!!!

I almost never vacuum because I hate the cord thing and I also don't like the noise. BUT turns out once I can zip around with this (it has a charger stand) I don't mind vacuuming at all. FYI: it comes in about 6 pieces that snap together and that looked daunting to me but I set it on the sofa and forced myself to be a little patient and it went together in 10 minutes.

It's a stick vacuum so it's best on hard floors. We got a dog and that is never-ending but this is just what I needed. It is great for kid's crumb messes too. Battery lasts for 30 minutes but in less than half that time I got the main area done so I haven't run out of battery yet. So all you do is put it together, set it in the charger station and when you need it turn it on, vacuum, and place it back in the charging station.
