I was expecting Delta machines to still be made in the USA, this is made in China and arrived with a strong smell, like moth balls+ rubber. That cost a half star. It was well-packed. When assembling it, one of the carriage bolts had defective threads and I had to either go buy another or, as I did, get out a tap-and-die and fix it myself. Chinese quality control, sigh. Minus another half star. The instructions are clear, almost readable English, with good illustrations plus a great photo on the box. So no problem assembling, a few minutes other than fixing the defective screw. Small surprise: manual advises cleaning all parts with WD-40 before installing (spark guard, etc.). Amazon description does not list all features: + Water tray to help keep workpiece cool while grinding
+ 5 year warranty (provided that the customer returns the product prepaid to a DELTA factory service center., register online!) * Wheel Speed: 2,000 to 3,400 RPM * Wheel Grit: 36 and 60 Grit Wheels * Cord Length: 6 feet + 2" plug (plugged in) Weight: 45.5 lbs. (Gross) * needs a 40 watt 120v bulb for a ceiling fan (high vibration). + Works excellently, very quiet, low vibration, seems safe, not sure how long the smell will last ... I would buy it again, despite the minor annoyances.

Even though it's listed at $129 got mine a few weeks ago for $79. Its a robust machine with lots of torque and many accessories. The reason for not giving it 5 stars is the fact that the medium grit wheel was a bit out of round and camber, this seems to be fairly common with the manufacturers of the wheels and not Delta's problem(?) . This was remedied with the beefy, diamond coated dressing tool that it came with.

This item arrived in the OEM packaging only---which as it turns out was sufficient protection for this heavy item. Typically the heavier the item the less likely it is to survive the freight carrier. The set up and start up required a bit more time due to an obvious wheel wobble when hand spinning the left wheel. The right wheel seemed to run straight and true. According to the instruction manual you are to tighten each of the wheels before applying power so I only tested by hand. I removed the left wheel, cleaned the arbor and washers and then reassembled and tightened both wheels. I hand spun the wheels and they looked good--no wobble. I powered up the unit on low speed and increased the speed with no discernible wobble in either side. I dressed both wheels with the included tool and the grinder ran smoothly all the way to the highest speed. Everything went well and the machine seems to be capable of doing the work I need--sharpening Lathe tools (only). I set this up with a Wolverine system --mounting first to a board and then to a craftsman grinder stand. The Wolverine jig also mounted to the board. As this unit will not fit directly to the craftsman stand (odd bolt hole pattern for stand). Once again I powered up the unit and ran it to the highest speed---very smooth operation. Just keep in mind that these do require some set up time before you pull from the box and use. Doing it correctly will save unnecessary bearing wear. Be patient and you'll be sharpening or grinding things in no time.

Except for the wheels, this is a great grinder. You expect the wheels to be trash so have a set you trust to replace them with, or, spend a couple hours getting them true and having to do it regularly.

I use this grinder to sharpen lathe tools and have a CBN wheel that works best at low speed, so the variable speed is perfect for me. I also cut a lot of wood and can use the higher speed on "Real" tools

Pretty nice grinder that does exactly what it's supposed to. In this day and age, that's rare.

Ordered this grinder to replace a little HF grinder I was given many years ago. I put the grinder on my work table when it arrived and fired up. It had a little vibration during the initial start but once it got up to full speed it ran smooth and quiet. Unfortunately, as many other reviewers have mentioned, the washers used to clamp the grinding wheels are stamped metal, and are really low quality. While the grinder ran smooth, the grinding wheels had a 1/4 total wobble side to side (1/8 in each way) as it spun. I took the covers off and watched the nut on the motor spindle. The nut always spun true so I was fairly confident the washers were just bad from the get go. Why Delta would make an otherwise fine tool and throw such cheap crummy washers on the thing is beyond me. Before sending it back, I decided to see if I could find alternatives to the washers, and sure enough a few minutes of Googling turned up some high quality replacements (Raptor Grinding Wheel Washers - Fifteen dollars a side). They were pricey, but I'm guessing probably cost as much as it would cost me to send the grinder back to Amazon. I will update the review when I get the washers and try them out.

I saw this same grinder (different label) at Sears, for a much higher price. This was "on sale" on amazon, with shipping included I saved over $50.
Having done an extensive review/ testing one thing that stands out is the 'lack of vibration' when running. The mfgr suggests the light be drop resistant, but I am using a standard bulb, with no issues at all.
The spin down time -- how long it took the wheel to stop after shut down-- was over 4 minutes, that means the bearing are very good.
With the added variable speed, this is really a great deal. I have been using this, free standing on a bench (not bolted down) and it does not wander or even move at all. -- It will be secured later, to a bench now being constructed--

For me, it is definitely worth the price.
