Style Name: 4-BaySize: 8 TB Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have had the chance to live with the Seagate 4-Bay 8TB NAS Server (STCU8000100) for a while now. I also have had its head-to-head competitor from Western Digtial the My Cloud EX4 8TB NAS Server. In this review I compare these two quite similar NAS Servers.

Conclusions (for those who just want the bottom line):
The Seagate NAS is a decent performer with about 42MBs writing speed and about 55MBs reading speed. It is feature rich and has a modest app ecosystem. The underlying Linux operating system seems stable and is largely invisible to most users. The Seagate NAS is simple to configure and use. It does a good job as a home or SOHO NAS and media server. It is very quiet in operation with almost no fan noise. Some drive clicking audible when busy.

Compared to the WD EX4 has the Seagate 4 drive NAS has very similar features at a close price point. Both are quiet and good in an office environment. Both have a modest app ecosystem. The big difference is performance with a slower CPU it outperforms the WD handily.

The Physical Package:
Physically the both boxes are close to the same size with the Seagate a bit wider. Both target the home and SOHO NAS marketplace. Both sport USB 3.0 ports for external drives and printers. Both have dual gigabit LAN connections. I don't know many home/SOHO users that understand LAN bonding, but it's in there! The WD supports dual power inputs which seems sort of feature overkill for the home market.

The Seagate NAS is based on a ARMv7 1.2GHz processor and has 512GB of RAM. The WD EX4 has a Feroceon 88FR131 ARM architecture at 2 GHz with 512MB. Both appear to be single core.

(PLEASE NOTE - MY REVIEW IS OF THE Seagate NAS 2-Bay 8TB Network Attached Storage Drive (STCT8000100)... FOR SOME REASON THESE REVIEWS MIX REVIEWS FOR THE 2 BAY AND THE 4 BAY VERSIONS OF THIS DEVICE. THE REVIEWS FOR THE 4-BAY VERSION DIFFER FROM THOSE OF THE 2-BAY DEVICE....)

I have had this server for over a week now and the device is top notch... It integrates well into my network and I've been able to move files around on my home network and over the Internet so far with no problem.

Here is where seagate gets only three stars.... Absolutely no included user guides in the box! This is absolutely criminal when dealing with a device of this complexity and expense. Seagate has answered the complaints about this here by pointing users to online instructions. Those online instructions are skeletal, opaque and very difficult to use. If they were provided as hard copy or as a .pdf on disk I still would not be satisfied.

The online support is laughable. The phone support is outstanding. I've been a computer person for over 40 years. I have done programming, large scale systems support, PC/Mac user support and I have written user documents and trained personnel as users and techs. The phone support helped me get to a functional use of the NAS, but I know from experience what questions to ask. I know that solving an issue is not always getting THE answer to a question but a series of questions answered over multiple phone calls and lots of experimentation between phone calls. That's the process and it is what it takes. The phone support staff is very good at handling the questions and patient in working towards the solution in your specific environment.

DO NOT PUT ANYTHING CONFIDENTIAL ON THESE DRIVES UNTIL YOU HAVE FULLY CONNECTED AND TESTED THEM, FIND ITS WHAT YOU NEED AND WANT TO KEEP THE PRODUCT.

PURCHASING DECISIONS:

Buy twice the size of drive size you think you need. I had a "brain bump" and ordered a 4TB forgetting that you only get 2TB of space and a 2TB mirror backup. I knew this but was not thinking. I loaded on two backups, then had to return it to buy an 8TB. I spent 21hrs PER drive, THREE times securely wiping the drives before I sent them back (that would be six days non-stop). My bad.

The Seagate NAS 2-Bay (STCT8000100) seems to be a decent solution for me to:
1). Backup a PC, two Macs and five Apple mobile devices
2). Provide redundancy by making a mirror image on the second drive from the first
3). Use as a Media/Streaming server, or access from anywhere
4). There are many add-on features and apps such a IP camera monitoring and storage and some more cool stuff to come I'm sure

MY SEAGATE HISTORY:

I previously had a GoFlex Home that can't be repaired, the drive died. I needed a new backup solution and media server. This unit worked out "OK" for me. **Off topic, GoFlex Home drives have SeaGate Barracuda drives and even though I bought an EXACT replacement, it did not work for me - even with the help of Seagate **. Thus the need for buying these drives.

THE GOOD PARTS OF THE NAS:

- This system is reasonably priced with decent "24/7 service" designed drives for long life - or so Seagate says

- It's quiet and energy efficient. There is one Ethernet port in and two USBs in or out. Great for hooking up an additional drive to THIS NAS.

Dear Mr. Mitchell,

We first wanted to provide our comprehensive support link for our Seagate NAS. This includes our complete hardware and software manuals along with additional essential information for this drive.

http://goo.gl/gTrqJm

We wanted to provide some suggestions to optimize your network performance. First, please make sure that your computer is connected to your router with a CAT-6 cable. Make sure that each device connected to your Gigabit network is using Gigabit ethernet. Your network will only run as fast as your slowest piece of equipment.

Additionally, check to see if there are any firmware updates available for the drive and your router. Please check for any driver updates from the motherboard manufacturer of your computer. Click on the link below for instructions on how to update the firmware for the Seagate NAS:

http://goo.gl/TZzE4d

If you are still experiencing slow transfer rates, try plugging the drive directly into a computer with a Gigabit ethernet card and see if your speeds improve. Should the performance improve, then it is likely there is a network bottleneck unrelated to the drive itself.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact our support staff and we will be happy to assist further:

Seagate Support
