Style Name: USB SATA-3 cable Verified Purchase
TL:DR: Works well most of the time, but has failed with one specific device (so far).

POSITIVE EXPERIENCE #1: I purchased and used this with Amazon's Western Digital 4 TB WD Red SATA III 5400 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM NAS Hard Drive WD40EFRX, and it worked very well.

POSITIVE EXPERIENCE #2: I attempted to read a Dell Touch Seagate Barracude 1000GB drive with a competitor's USB to SATA (USB-DSC5), and although it could see the disc, it wouldn't allow access to contents and would not establish an accessible drive letter unless the drive was formatted, which would destroy the contents. I attached that same hard drive to this adapter & it provided full access to the Barracuda 1000GB contents without issue.

ADVERSE EXPERIENCE #1: Later, I purchased Amazon's Samsung Electronics 840 EVO Series 2.5-Inch 512 SATA_6_0_gb Solid State Drive MZ-7PD512BW. Through this adapter, the Samsung Magician software cannot recognize the Samsung 840 EVO as a Samsung product.

Karl Voss left a great review indicating that the first SATA to USB adapter he used with the Samsung 840 EVO had the same problem, but that a different SATA to USB adapter worked fine. It seems that some adapters do not faithfully pass through the exact drive identification information, while others do. One can argue this is Samsung's problem, but other SATA to USB adapters do faithfully pass through the drive identification information.

SUMMARY: I guess you need a couple of these, because one or the other can fail on any given drive, but with two different USB to SATA adapters, at least one has always worked for me.

I upgraded from a HP DV3T to a HP Envy 15. I replaced the stock HDD with a SDD and used the HDD as an external. The DV3T has a eSATAp port, while the Envy 15 has only USB 3.0. This adapter fit my needs. The speeds between eSATA and USB 3.0 are very similar. 2.5" drives do not require the power adapter and 3.5" drives do. I tested this adapter with a WD2500BEKT and WD30EZRX. The LED blinks when the drive is being accessed. The only con is that the cable is a tad short.

I don't have any CONS for this device. Below is PROS.

1. The USB 3.0 read/write speed is the same as my external USB3 hard drive.
2. Use USB port to power 2.5 inch hard drive.
3. Include power adapter for 3.5 inch hard drive.
4. Work with hard drives and internal Bluray drive (No need to buy external HDD or optical drives -> Save money).

Note that the cable is about 1 foot, but it's fine with me.

Pros:
Correctly priced
USB 3.0
Includes power adapter for 3.5 inch HDD
Does not require power adapter for smaller drives
Works with devices besides hard drives

Cons:
USB cable is on the short side
The adapter has a lot of play while connected
Adapter does not support drives larger than 2TB!!

I bought this item to use in combination with a Seagate Baracuda 3TB drive (ST3000DM001) as cheap backup storage. While I was initially happy with build quality of the product, soon I found out that whenever I connected my 3TB drive, it would not work (drive appears as unformatted). The drive of course would work with other adapters, so that wasn't the problem. Looking through the reviews it doesn't appear that anyone has tried this with a drive larger than 2TB, and I have found no information that states anything with regards to this. Unless someone says that it has worked for him, I believe that this product does not support high capacity (>2TB drives), which wouldn't be that odd.

Besides that, the product is good quality, although the adapter moves slightly while connected up and done, but it is expected in some degree, and anyways this adapter isn't supposed to be used while in movement. The supplied power adapter is small and works as expected. My only problem is the capacity, but besides that it's good enough.

For anyone looking for adapter, I would only recommend it if you are sure that you are not going to use a drive larger than 2TB, which are going to be the standard in the near future. Personally, I would simply consider another product, just in case.

Used this with Macrium Reflect drive clone software. The first try failed in the middle, possibly because had not left the computer completely alone. The second try worked, I did leave the computer completely alone.
Cloning about 250GB of data from a 1TB magnetic drive to a 960GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD took longer than I expected. I don't remember the exact duration, but I think it was more than half an hour.
And now that I've done the clone and install, what do I do with the IO Crest USB 3.0 to SATA 6G dapter? Good think it doesn't cost much.

Pros:
1. It actually worked with the USB 3.0 ports on my computer (this could be a con as well).
2. Comes with a 12V/1A power supply for use with larger HDDs.

Cons:
1. Much slower than expected. Amazon's product description states that this has UASP and SATA III (6Gps) support, but the speeds I experienced clearly indicates that either UASP is not enabled (NOT shown on the actual product box or documentation) or the product is not capable of SATA III (6Gbps) speeds (mentioned on both the product box and documentation) or it is missing both functions.

Given the above con, I would not recommend this cable to those looking for a fast USB 3.0 to SATA III cable. The SSD I used in my testing was the Patriot Wildfire 240GB SSD, which is capable of >520Mbps reads when connected to a SATA III port inside a computer, but only managed <330Mbps reads using this cable. The fastest cable of this type I have come across is from StarTech, and I would recommend you buy that for use with 2.5in HDDs/SSDs. My Patriot Wildfire was able to hit >430Mbps reads using the following:

I hope this helps.
