So when I found myself in the market for a folding bicycle, I didn't think it would be so hard to see one in person. I live in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country and still every box store, bike shop, and pawn shop had every kind of bike in the world except folding bikes. Craigslist to the rescue, I was able to sample all kinds of folding bikes second hand and even bought a montague crosstown, but still needed a quality small folder with 20 inch wheels. I did a lot of research and decided on this folder despite the lack of reviews because it had a lot of the same features and higher quality components of high end folders and Amazon had it at the time for under $160.00. I felt like I was going to get a $350.00 bike for $160.00 and that is exactly what I received. The fit and finish of the bicycle was top notch. The bike came 96% set up, I just needed to adjust the front brake a little and tighten a bolt on handlebars. You probably should take your bike to the local bike shop to have it professionally set up for you, but honestly most of these guys hate when people buy bikes online and not from them. I didn't feel like getting ripped off so I just googled what I needed to know. The bike actually also comes with a very nice and well printed color owner's manual which walks you through the basics of setup as well. The seat is very comfy and seems high end. The bike itself folds very easily, locks folded, and wheels around like a stroller or luggage. You would think that would be common to all folding bikes, but it is not. My one issue was how they ship this bike. It's literally just folded up and placed in an oversized box. No packing material whatsoever. That was really disappointing. Charge $10.00 more and pack the bike properly. Mine arrived in a crushed box with one giant hole and several small ones. Luckily the only damage was to the bell, which I had to throw away. Do they really ship their high end bikes like this?

I've been looking at folding bikes to use with my RV without having to use a bike rack on the back. One of my main considerations was seat height, as I have long legs. All the specs for these things seem to focus on the height of the rider; totally worthless information. And they all are overly generous. This model says riders up to 6'4". I'm only 6'1" and this bike just fits. My inseam is 35", which should give you a better idea of if it will fit you.

Another consideration is folded size. If you look at a comparison chart, you'll see the Downtown and Urban models are quite similar. One difference is the Downtown does not have folding pedals. So it will be a couple of inches thicker when folded. You can, however, remove the right pedal easily (the left one doesn't matter, as it doesn't stick out) with a wrench. Other differences are wheel size. The Downtown uses a standard 20" wheel. Listed weight is almost identical.

Gearing should also be a consideration, since you only have one gear. I was concerned that it would be geared too low to make pedaling easier, but speeds slower. Happily, it wasn't, and is a good compromise. Moves right along on flat ground!

So, I bought the Downtown as it was also quite a bit cheaper than the Urban.

I also own a Dahon Vybe. Although a 7 speed bike, similar in many respects to the Allen, so I put them side by side to compare them. Here are a few thoughts.

Materials. Both use quality materials and weigh in the mid twenty pound range. With a folder, carbon fiber components, or trying to shave a few ounces, is silly. Welds on the Dahon seem a little cleaner, but not much. I found in ridin the bikes, the handlebars flexed a little more on the Allen. Not enough to concern me.

Components.

I bought bike 1 on oct 6th. After the first time I sat on it, the seat post no longer slid up and down the frame. Due to the gouges I could see on the seat post, I believe poor finishing on the frame led to a shard of metal locking the seat post.

I ordered a replacement bike. I still haven't returned bike 1.

Bike 2 looked ok. Right brake was very soft. I took it to a bike store and spent 20 dollars getting brakes adjusted and pumped up the tires. Biking home from the store, I noticed the bike pedals clicked with each rotation. The next day, rear tire was deflated.

Late for work, I took bike 1, with the locked seat post to work. On the corner of 96th and 2nd ave, the pedal crank fell off the frame and I almost died.

So 1/5 stars - would not recommend to anyone I care about. Perfect present if you want to murder someone.

Here you go...
I ordered this bike because I have both local commuting and city commuting. I live in the country. There are a few moderate hills. I take a taxi to a train to commute the city. As for the reason I purchased this particular bike, it's the frame, folding mechanism, ease of doing so and its styling. It's a nice looking machine!!! As for handling. I have had road bikes and cruiser bikes. This bike rates with the best of them for center of gravity, holding to the road, and comfort. The seat/seat post is awesome. What I knew would have to happen is a change in components like the brake triggers and composite aluminum/plastic folding pedals. You can change these out to aluminum folding for about 40$. Also the brake calipers. If you treat this bike as a starting point, you get your money's worth. It's engineering is real and it's business side of things it's a good price point. Finally I added a back rack attached to the seat post with a Roswell commuter bag. I'll be adding fenders as they arrive. What is missing is gearing. On the flat this is absolutely correct. For hills I would have purchased a seven speed but for folding I foresaw a lot of grease on the pants and problems with derailers. So to modify to an old school three speed hub, I ordered a 20" pre manufactured kit from Taylor wheels in Germany through Amazon. I'm not sure why the folding bike companies have not caught onto this yet, simply said its quiet, economical and will take care of all road conditions without the difficulty of derailers and the extra hardware that it encompasses in space management and simplicity. It's a great find to see something so well engineered. I'm a furniture designer and consultant for manufacturing of all design components in high end interior architecture.
