I bought this a few weeks ago as my home media center, and we use it as a PC, storage and as the movie storage/playback device.
The good things are:
1) HDMI port. I like the ability to connect my TV to it directly to play back all of my media, as opposed to using the ever-kludgy DLNA navigation UI on the TV to access media on the storage. I use a wireless keyboard/mouse or the Android QRemote app for playback control
2) Gobs of functionality and apps. Just a crap load of functionality and s/w included with this little device. Surprisingly, it all just seems to work.
3) The OS is easy to navigate and use.
4) Overall, the device feels fast enough to me both from the storage and app performance perspective. I'm not putting any demanding loads on it and not planning to; for home use, I found it totally sufficient (I bought the 4Gb version).
5) Noise has never been a concern. You can hear it when it spins up the drives, but most of the time it sits there almost completely silently.
The main things I don't like so far:
1) The white soapbox plastic case is just a letdown. Nothing wrong with it functionally, but just not up to par aesthetically. I would happily pay extra $20 if QNAP made it in the black metal case like some of their more expensive models.
2) The setup was a little more finicky than I expected based on the reviews. Not hard, just took some retries due to sporadic failures. Also, the initial formatting of the drives took foreeeeeeeever (WD Red 4Gbs)
Overall, I do recommend this thingy for home media use - reasonably priced, has HDMI port and XBMC as well as many other apps. Ease of use is easy to use.

The is the latest version and worth the slightly higher cost. Very fast and works flawlessly. I have it setup using 4 WD 4TB Red drives in a RAID 5 + hot spare. The apps are great and easy to setup and use. I am a photographer and use this primarily as my image storage device. Love being able to access and upload my images from any device, anywhere in the world. Also, very simple to send a link to securely share an image folder with a client without time consuming effort of uploading images. There is software included that also allows you to create albums of the images stored on the disk.

Super good NAS. I Had purchased a different brand a week before this one. I could not get it to be recognized on my network despite all the troubleshooting recommendations. If it was this hard early I wanted no part. Sent it back and bought this one. Oh my what a pleasure. I purchased 3 Deskstar 4 tb 7200 rpm hard drives, plugged them in the Qnap, plugged in the qnap and used the qfinder download to configure the NAS. THe qfinder found the NAS and it's wizard took me step by step to setting up the NAS in about 10 minutes. It set up a raid 5 configuration for protection of data in case of 1 hard drive failure. Commonly used folders were set up with proper permissions.
I purchased this item to stream movies to my tv. I had been using single network hard drives which were getting finicky connecting to the network. I didn't want to lose all my de-commercialized shows so I wanted raid capability. The streaming is fantastic to my DLNA enabled SONY TV.
THIS NAS has cloud capabilities but I am not going to use them so can't speak to how easy they are to configure. If I decide to use the cloud I would probably go with PLEX media server which is downloadable app for the qnap. The other apps look very appealing - I am a privacy nut so I trust very little to cloud services. Will wait to see if the whole canal cloud is more secure than Synology's.
I love the ability to schedule on and off time for the NAS. I have no need for it to be running 24/7 for cloud access. Works like a charm.
I was amazed at the speed of movie transfer from my windows 7 computer 75mb/ sec. So much faster than my single network hard drives.

My hats off to QNAP. I am a IT professional with over 20 years of corporate experience. I am left amazed at what QNAP has packed into this NAS! I work on Netapp NAS solutions which run around 300K and my little QNAP TS-451 home NAS has more built in functionality than my work Netapp's. Now the Netapp would win for performance hands down but that is expected. I don't think the average home buying understands the ease of use, amount of functionality and ease of installation QNAP brings. First off I have a 20K QNAP TS-EC1679U-RP at work. QNAP has the exact same interface (operating system) on the TS-451 and the TS-EC1679U-RP. I made a mistake and purchased the TS-431 which had a slower processor, less memory, and no visualization. I bought NAS quality hard drives and first configured them in the TS-431 setting up RAID 5 Storage Pool. Now on every server and storage device i have worked on once you set a RAID array you can not take the drives out and put them in another server or storage device without completely erasing the drives. Well i returned my TS-431 and received my TS-451 expecting to have to erase my drives and start over. Nope i placed them in the 451 in different slots and my without a error message my 451 came up configured! This is significant because now that you are using RAID 1 and beyond you are protecting against a single drive failure but that is to waste if your storage system breaks and all the disk have to be formatted when place in a replacement system (happen to me when I had a cheap buffalo station that failed a year after purchase). While limited to one VM running, it is inconceivable to have the capabilities of visualization at home for this price range. I setup a home server and domain.Read more ›
