Everything in this package is very high quality. The collar has 5 settings - tone, tone w/correction levels 1 thru 4. It is rechargeable and the literature says a charge should last about 2 months. Included is 500 feet of solid core wire; because of the way I had to layout the perimeter I needed to buy another 500 feet. A local pet supply store carried it for about $18. Laying out and burying the wire is the most labor intensive and time-consuming part of the job. I just wanted to "fence" in the backyard and opted to run the wire around the back, then back track along the same path in order to complete the loop. Other options include running the wire around the front of the house or up and into the roof line (gutters?) or attic, which Petsafe did not recommend. As far as burying the wire, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you search local rental places for a wire-feed trencher. This machine costs about $70/day in Atlanta, was very hard to find, but was a huge help. In short, it digs the trench, buries the wire, and dumps the dirt on top of the wire. I still had to clear some areas in advance by cutting tree roots and moving rocks. However, once I got going I laid about 450 feet of wire in a little over an hour.
As far as training your dog(s), the manual gives excellent instruction. You will need about 2 weeks of leash training, followed by 2 weeks of unleashed but supervised training. FOLLOW THE MANUAL - don't take shortcuts. It's easier to teach the dog right the first time than retrain a dog with bad habits.
I now have 3 Papillons running freely in the back yard with no problems. They each had their quirks; one learned almost immediately, one so-so, and the other was hard-headed. I am convinced that by not taking shortcuts I was able to shepherd all 3 successfully through the process.

Although the shipping took longer than I would have liked, I finally received this and MAN, how did I ever live without this? I can't even imagine not having it now. Firstly, it is simple to put up, the instructions are so well written and clear, I think a 10 year old could do it. If you have an existing fence, you do not have to put this in the ground. I read on some reviews that this is a huge chore buying, and if you have a huge yard, I guess it is, but I just attached it to my fence, used my lawn edger to help dig a rut where there was no fence, and boom, it's up. After MUCH research for a couple of months, I decided on this because it isn't wireless. The big huge wireless box is not only ginormous and ugly, but it doesn't have good reviews overall, and is prone to failure for many reasons, including that the signal fluctuates and makes the boundary you set move up to 2' either way at any given time. First, you lay it out around the area you want to fence, making sure it's just as you want it. They include helpful tips and advice too to help you in deciding how to lay your fence. At first, I was just going to lay it around the perimeter of my yard, but they show all kinds of ways to protect your pool area, garden spot, and cover difficult areas. They also explain how to train your animal precisely, which I was kind of worried about, but if you just follow their instructions on what and how to train on what days, it's simple. Days 1-5 for example, you just walk your pet around with the unit off and give him treats when he avoids the flagged areas. You do this for 30 minutes a day or something. Then day 6-10, for example, you'd see if he avoids the area by himself, and if he does you praise him a lot and reinforce the training.Read more ›

Expensive... lets hope it lasts as long as the Innotek unit that it replaced.

I had a 5100 Innotek contain and train that was simply amazing for like 10 years... I just couldn't justify paying 300 for replacement collars because they don't make it anymore and you can only get NOS stuff or used.

The warning boundary on this setup is quite narrow... goes to shock pretty shortly after it warns.. but it does work consistently all the way around the yard and they offer a lot of extra collar options for this.

The collars have to be "plugged in" to charge... this was very disappointing (not the product quality, i'm sure its durable and will work...its just that, it's a considerable added expense for "Rechargeable" and its not amazing...i was dissappiointed) they have a little rubber cover over the charge port on the collar that I am sure is going to dry rot, wear out, or get caught on things in a couple years. I'm not loving this, and for a unit at this price, and the cost of an extra rechargeable collar, they should be a plug free charging design like the old Innotek ones were.

All in all a decent solution with a lot of options for flexible installations and need, but they could have done a couple things to add to the "quality feel" like the old ones.

I would buy this unit again (and i'd make the same complaints.. but in general be OK with the purchase)

This system replaced one we've had for several years and seems to be holding up. Although the concept may seem a bit harsh, invisible fencing quite literally saved my dog's life and has given her many years of complete freedom around the garden. We would have had to put her down without it, because there are no dog parks in our area, being tied up made her hysterical and if she escaped she would sometimes be gone for days. She went from being a neurotic rescue dog to a much loved member of our family. Since we drape the wires on an existing (though inadequate) fence, she learned to use the system within minutes, with a minimal adverse learning curve (probably got shocked twice). Her ability to bond and her attitude toward us changed within days of experiencing this freedom. I am pleased that we can disable the shock in this model; for my dog the warning tone is now enough. On the rare occasions when she gets loose in the forest behind our house, she comes back within minutes because she trusts us, and I appreciate that she doesn't get zapped on the way home. I also recommend spending the extra money for this rechargeable model – replacing batteries was a pain.
