PM is a shadow of what it use to be, as if they confuse "mechanics" of stuff-with-moving-parts their advertizes want us to buy -vs- actual "mechanics" of practical maintenance & repair, DIY projects, and hobbyist level mechanical engineering. Its been in a downward spiral for the past 15 years, of the roughly 20 years I've subscribed. I gave up on it before, at the old $20 per year rates, then returned via Amazon at $5 per year on sale, which is reasonable, 50 cents an issue, for what it is today. I only tolerated $12/year off-sale renewals, and the cutback to 10 issues, because Amazon's do-nothing auto-renewal makes it so easy, but I really should have canceled a while ago. Now they want to cut back to 4 issues a year for $12, not worth it unless they do a major overhaul to return to the content scope and quality they had 20 years ago. Instead I guess they'll probably cease to exist like so many other great old magazines.

Update and clarification: The 4 issues a year for $12 offer was from Amazon, via an email and in their subscription manager, that prompted my cancellation (disabling auto renewal) and this review. Some days after posting this review the offer returned to 10 issues for $12. Maybe the offer was an error, or test case for customer tolerance.

Another update and full disclosure: While picking through the Cyber Monday deals I saw PM (print) on sale for $5/yr and renewed. I know I'd miss getting it, see something interesting enough to buy an issue at the news stand price, and end up spending more. I recently did the same with Popular Science. Its a good enough excuse to keep the subscribes active and hope the publisher improves it. Updated review title accordingly.

1.0 out of 5 stars WOW - something changed and not for the better November 17, 2014
By Farmuel

WOw - dont know what happened to this magazine - it use to be very enjoyable - now they have articles on cooking - articles written by wannabee PBS authors complete with intricate plots and lots of flowery adjectives ( I expect there will be poetry soon), articles on PC issues but very very little on mechanical items and their workings.

This use to be a great magazine but I cancelled my subscription - didn't hold my interest for 5 minutes. I dont know what happened but they really changed to more of a PC / Yuppie interest magazine - very little to do with mechanics.

I have found one though that reminds me a lot of what popular mechanics use to be - its called Farm SHow - the only problem with this one is they have tons of ideas but few instructions - but its all mechanics no PC propaganda that you are paying for, certainly no yuppies and no poetry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dual Print/Kindle option is PERFECT!!!! October 13, 2014
Access Method:print_and_digital| Subscription Term Name:1 year auto-renewal|Verified Purchase
This has long been one of my favorite magazines. Now I can get the print version that I can read anywhere, at anytime, and share with family members while ALSO getting it on my KINDLE FIRE (my preferred format for reading magazines) for only one additional dollar per year, I had to subscribe. Thank you, Hearst Publishing, and Amazon, for cooperating and giving us, the customers, what we want. Now, if you'd only extend this to some of my other favorite titles...

UPDATE: This is the best Kindle magazine format ever! I love the navigation buttons. Popular Mechanics has really outdone themselves. Getting the paper and Kindle for one reasonable price is fantastic. I wish all magazines were offered in this format!

3.0 out of 5 stars For readers, not DO-ers January 1, 2015

Popular Mechanics doesn't have a much Do It Yourself stuff as I remember them having when I was a child, 40 years ago. I'm disappointed with that. A lot of reviews and stories; I want to be *MAKING*.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work at all on Kindle paperwhite (7th generation) September 18, 2015
By Fabio
Access Method:print_and_digital|Subscription Term Name:1 year auto-renewal
I signed up for a subscription to this magazine on my kindle paperwhite (7th generation) but it does not work. It says that I need to update the software of my kindle but it has the most recent version of the software. Also I tried resetting the device and did not work. So at this point I am not able to read the magazine on my kindle and I think the only option for me will be to cancel the subscription.

For the money the Kindle Fire HD6 is outstanding. I have used it with several magazines and books with great success. Being a long time reader of PM I thought this would be a perfect match. This doesn't seem to be the case as the print is very small and makes it very hard to read. Some have said you can double tap to get a larger text but not on this Kindle. There is no zoom in or out on PM so it seems like I am stuck with the tiny print. If I want PM I will stay with the paper version.

5.0 out of 5 stars zoom on digital version November 10, 2014
Access Method:print_and_digital|Subscription Term Name:1 year auto-renewal
Digital version needs to add the ability to zoom text. Right now it's only good for looking at the pictures. Still, for $1 a year it's OK.
update 2/10/15 Amazon has fixed this (on the kindle fire hd) pinch to zoom now works on magazines. Yea!

Great rag. I love how they have a project in the back that any guy can do with a few basic tools. I also like to see new products before they hit the shelves.
