John Wojtowicz is anything but boring. Between gay encounters in Vietnam, marrying 5 times with some probable bigamy tossed in, campaigning in politics to get gay sex (the politics seemed a distant second), going to prison, having a bizarre family life growing up, and of course getting 2 movies made about him because he held up a bank to get a guy a sex change, you realize there's not really enough time to cover everything here. You could really make a documentary about multiple points in the guy's life and have something really pretty satisfying. He's a bit like the crazy lady in Errol Morris' Tabloid but maybe a little too honest. For example, his statements on the early gay movement will probably not go down as PC but seem hard to refute given his time in the movement and other evidence that comes out in the documentary at various points, which his male wife from prison is particularly open in a way I wouldn't of expected.

They give it their best shot to put it all in but there's various moments where you feel like they are giving him a bit of a pass. There are hints that John was a bit more sinister than he's saying. The sex change BF paints him very differently on multiple occasions and while it could just be the cattiness of a jilted partner there seems to be a kernel of truth since this is a guy who openly admits to using almost anything as leverage for sex, which is particularly interesting when he's describing the pre-bank robbery preparations. Maybe it's cause the guy just seems in such poor health through the whole film. It's clearly shot over a long period of time.

Please note, I've not yet seen Dog Day Afternoon.

John was a sweet guy. Not necessarily the brightest, but a man full of love. A romantic who "married" three people at the same time. A gay rights activist who never found himself until Hollywood made a picture based on his well-publicized bank robbery. He's a good Italian son, a sweet brother, and a man who held hostages at gunpoint so that his lover could get a sex change.

If you want to see a sweet man make terrible decisions, and find conflict in your heart when you root for him to win, this movie will shake your expectations up and leave you with a more open heart than you wanted.

A rather depressing documentary about the real life inspiration for Dog Day Afternoon. John lived an interesting and strange life prior to the bank robbery that made him famous. After the robbery his life became boiled down to that one act and he tried to capitalize on it for the rest of his life. The documentary is on the long side and ends on a depressing note.

Very well done film that really delved into the man behind the story. John Wojtowicz was the kind of guy every single one of us knew, so even though his actions and reasoning may neither be anything we could ever imagine doing ourselves, the film is eminently relatable, I think thanks to the efforts of the filmmakers. Really compelling filmmaking.

I really love what Drafthouse Films had been up to recently. This is a good doc and if you like it I encourage you to check out some of their other films. Of course check out Dog Day Afternoon as well if to haven't already.

This is a fairly interesting film that tells the true story behind the bank robbery depicted in the classic film "Dog Day Afternoon." The Dog is a garrulous old coot that does not seem to have the part of the brain that censors his mouth, but the film keeps going for a while after it's internal energy winds down. This would be good for fans of the film and people interested in a notable chapter in gay history

Not the most cinematic documentary ever, but content-wise it is fantastic. What really makes it interesting is that as a viewer we're tempted to focus only in on the big even in the story -- the robbery. And to an extent, that's what we get. The lead up to it, the robbery itself, and, most importantly, the aftermath. The long-term aftermath. So you can see you a cultural icon basically became a sad, old, pathetic caricature.

a great study on the value we give ourselves and the human need to leave a mark or even achieve fame. Mostly, the need to be appreciated , recognized and loved even if what one person has to show forth in order to achieve this, is not what society would necessarily deem an appropriate " achievement " .
