I am quite possibly the least technical person left in the USA. My usual routine for setting up computers and printers is to wait for someone else to do it!

I decided to be bold and at least open the box to this Canon MG5620 printer. Well, since the box was open, I thought I might as well unpack it. And, well, one thing led to another, and I had the thing hooked up and running in less than 30 minutes, all by myself! It was very easy and well explained and went along beautifully.

As with the other printers I've bought, this one comes with "set up" ink cartridges, that are not as full as those you will need to buy to refill it.

I'm loving the LCD screen! At 2.5", it's easy to see and use. A real advantage for us "senior citizens".

Of course, none of this matters if it won't print, right? I tried printing some forms, no problem. I printed several patterns complete with pictures and charts, perfect. And then attempted to print some pics we took of the grandkids and fall fun straight from my phone (new and exciting for me!) These also printed perfectly.

I am very happy with this printer and will recommend it to my friends.

Received this printer today, and had it unboxed and on my network within 25 minutes. Some random observations follow, hoping to add a longer-term review over time.

- Easy, just brainless clicking of "next", set up using a Windows 7 pc. I will test against Windows 8.1 soon.

- Make sure you check the printer dimensions (14.6 x 18 x 5.9 inches) against the space you had in mind. This wasn't a problem, personally, but I had assumed a much smaller printer based on the photos.

- Note that the printer comes with 'setup ink tanks'. I'm afraid this is code for ink cartridges that contain less ink than you get when buying a cartridge at retail. If I'm wrong, please comment on this review... and I'll update it for the benefit of future readers.

- Note that printer speed is given in "ipm" instead of the older and more familiar "ppm". IPM is actually a more accurate measure, but requires you to forget all the data points floating in your head about ppm (pages per minute). At the bottom of this review under "Interesting Links", I've added a great non-technical description of IPM versus PPM, if you care to read more.

- The 2.5" LCD screen size is adequate. Display is bright and vibrant.

- Very pleased with the printing quality of both DSLR and phone-based photographs. Mind you, the ink cartridges are full.

- Borderless photos rolling out of the printer, seem like magic, if you've never done it before. Important to note that the quality of these photos is VERY VERY dependent on the quality of the paper you're using.

- Scanner worked fast, and gave outstanding results when looking at the scan on my pc. I did not print the scanned image, however.

Installation:
The Canon PIXMA MG5620 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner and Copier includes a very useful and easy to follow step-by-step installation guide. I went with the wireless setup using the WPS (Wifi Protected Setup) feature (available on most WiFi routers). A CD with the driver software is also included but is not necessary if you have an Internet connection. I downloaded the printer software directly from Canon, using the web site address provided in the installation guide.

Printer Operation panel:
If all you do is simple document printing on regular printing paper via the network or with a direct USB connection, the operation panel will not be used too frequently after the initial setup. Also, the Canon Quick Menu software, installed during the printer setup, can also be used to change all the printer settings from your computer. The Pixma 5620 printer offers many useful options via the printer panel and the Quick Menu for scanning, copying and managing other advanced printing needs.

Feeding paper:
The 5620 has a pull out tray to make it simpler to feed and adjust the paper. The tray will make a clicking noise when it is completely pulled out and locked in place. This feature is most useful when feeding non-standard paper sizes, because it gives you closer access to the paper guide (to adjust paper width). Once the paper is in, it's as simple as pushing the tray back in and aligning the white arrow from the tray with the white arrow on the side of the printer (or until the tray can't be pushed in any further).
Since this is a duplex printer (can print on both sides of the paper), you must make sure to place the printing side of the paper face down. Photo paper has to be fed with the glossy side down.

The short story: Nice photo output. Easy to setup. Text looks good but easily smudges if touched inside of a minute.

From the unboxing to printing took around 10 minutes. The first thing I printed was a photo from my Nexus 5. I used Canon's app to crop the image and sharpen it up a bit before sending it to the printer. The 5620 comes with 3 pieces of 4 x 6 Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II so that's what I used. The end result was a glossy, richly colorful rendition of the photo from my phone. The output was true enough to lay bare the flaws in the photo I took. Next then, I printed a photo from my Canon Rebel t2i. This time I used a sheet of 8.5 x 11 Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II. The resulting print was very high quality. Rich colors, good contrast. I've printed many more photos since then and have been happy with the results.

Text output, though, is another story. Printing from MS Word is relatively fast and the output looks good -- crisp and sharp. However, the bolder text takes too long to dry. It is very easy to smudge a just printed page. My go to office paper is a Xerox Premium Multipurpose Paper with ColorLock. I am very careful to print on the correct side, still, I have to let the pages dry before touching them. It's safe to touch the text after about 50 seconds. For me, that's too long.

A couple of other annoyances: I've sent print jobs only to eventually get a message telling me to open the paper output door. Would be nice if the door automatically opened or if, at least, the message came as soon as I hit the print button. The paper tray can be a little finicky. It's no surprise that the unit won't print if the paper tray is not in all the way. Again, though, it would be nice if the error message could be delivered right away.
