I bought this for my 5 year old, and she has been happily snapping pictures of everything she can since Christmas. The build quality is decent, holding up to the abuse children can deliver to toys. The battery door fell off during a walk in the woods, but tape over the batteries works fine (the door doesn't have metal contacts on it, so the camera still operates fine).
Pictures will require a steady hand, and since there is a 0.5 - 1 second delay between when the button is pressed and when the picture is captures, this can be a lesson in patience for a child. That said, my daughter has been able to pull off a few decent shots. I'm adding a few photos to this review.
I recommend this as a first camera for a child - younger kids who have trouble with the camera would enjoy the video feature.
