This is a neat set to give a kid the idea of how to do string art, but it would be much less expensive just to buy foam board, sewing pins, embroidery thread. It would be so easy to make your own set. The set is really expensive for what it is; there are $4 worth of materials in the box MAX if they were purchased separately. Plus if you bought them yourself, you could get the colors of thread that you wanted.
It does come with 3 patterns that are preprinted on the foam board, and that's really the only advantage of buying this boxed kit. They are: heart, peace sign, and "hi". If you want to make your own, you must turn the board over, but that only gives you one shot at getting your own design right.
It would have been nice if they'd included a way to HANG the finished art. As it is, it's just foam board- you can prop it up against something to stand it up, but there's no way to hang it.

When this Craft-tastic String Art Kit arrived and I checked out the contents, I realized that people that sew or craft might not need to go any farther than a closet or bin for similar materials. My version wouldn't be an exact duplicate of the Craft-tastic kit, but it would have all the elements. I questioned if the convenience of the kit justified the cost difference between buying or making my own.

My answer is yes, paying more for the convenience factor is worth it to me. I can put my hands on foam, thread and pins, but having the materials isn't the same as having a ready made kit available. This kit provides the option of jumping right in with little thought.

I've never been able to reliably determine what other people, especially teenaged family members, will find interesting or fulfilling. There's been a more than a few times that I've watched teenagers become indifferent to an activity or hobby that only a week before was THE most important thing in life.

This is designed intelligently with all necessary direction and material available in a box. For potential artists checking out different mediums, the Craft-tastic String Art Kit provides an introduction and a way to gauge commitment and interest. It also has an entertainment factor that would benefit a lot of activities (sleepovers, camping trips, etc).

I ordered the kit with a specific tween in mind. Her pure enjoyment while she was creating was obvious, but I especially loved the pride she showed with the completed pieces. Deciding where they would be placed took almost as long as creating one. The project didn't trip any triggers though. As far as I can tell, she's gone as far with string art as she's going to go and is back to her sketchpad. All in all, a hit.

If strong smells bother you, the first thing you might want to do when you get this kit is take the supplies out to leave and let air out. The foam squares SMELL! It's a very strong chemical stink that really bothered me and my daughter was not liking it very much either. I've had this airing out a few days and it's still not at the point where we are ready to use it. But I hope in about another week it will be better. I have done this before to things like foam craft items, new checkbook covers, and kindle covers. I hate that some products can have such awful and strong scents. It does make you wonder how safe it is to be breathing it in.

Besides the smell, the actual craft has very easy-to-follow directions. If you want to make the three designs shown, the pin holes are already on the foam canvases. If you want to make your own design, you can free-hand it, or make a pattern, then strategically place pin-hole dots along it (ever half-in to inch or so) and then transfer those dots on to the other (blank) side of the foam canvases.

My daughter has printed out the 1D logo from the band One Direction. And once the smell of these foam pieces is better, we'll be giving this craft a try. She googled the logo, then saved the image. We then enlarged it onto a document and printed it out. She placed pin-dot marks around it. Now how to transfer.... You can use transfer paper, or you can just make the dot marks very dark (like with a sharpie pen) or indented in a little so that they show up on the back side of your pattern Then on the back side, using a regular pencil, color over each pin mark (coloring a bit bigger than the pin size).Read more ›

This was a unique craft that is different from many of the other things we've done. My daughter who is almost ten really enjoyed it. They can use the templates to make three patterns or make their own designs. Different colored strings make it colorful and pretty. My daughter enjoyed making it. She spent hours on it. They have to learn how to do it but once you have the hang of it, it's not hard. There are sharp pins, though so you have to be very careful, especially if your child has younger siblings. The only thing I didn't like and the reason I took off a star was because it is really hard to hang. Because it is delicate and has all those pins, I really would've liked if I could've hung it easily. Still it is a fun craft and good for your own child or as a gift.
