Been a professional bartender for ten years. Don't use these, unless you enjoy varnish as one of the flavoring agents in your mixed drinks. Go with something like this one from Kegworks,Wooden KegWorks Cocktail Bar Muddler or really any hardwood without varnish.

This muddler works well, but the lacquer is not only unnecessary, but also counterproductive. The lacquer begins to wear off after several uses, which means that it's probably somewhere in the drink. If I were to purchase a muddler again, I would either buy a stainless steel one or, if I got a wood one, it would not be lacquered.

I agree that, while cheap and functional, the finish does wear off over time, and it no doubt went into my cocktail, then into my tummy. Not good. Too bad they didn't just make it out of natural untreated wood. I'm currently shopping for a replacement.

enough said. this is LACQUERED wood. It will come off in any liquid that it is exposed to. Please do not use this for muddling your favorite cocktails. I will be purchasing an appropriate muddler for it's correct use soon. Oversight on my side of things.

You get what you pay for....it looks like its missing a piece and I didn't put two and two together as far as laquered wood. Not a good idea for making drinks with unless you like drinking laquer with your liquor....yucker!!!

I was very disappointed by this wooden muddler. The description says it is lacquered-the finish on the muddler I received is very dull and seems like it might almost come off. The wood is most certainly NOT sealed. I find this very troubling as I want to be able to easily rinse of my muddler and make another drink. I am also concerned about the quality of the finish-is it food safe? I have decided that I will not use this on my beverages.

Really struggling not to give this 4 stars, but something must be said. I purchased this for my home bar, I figured for the price it was too good to be true! Well that was sort of the case, if you have access to some decent grit sand paper it can "Almost" be solved. So, Like previously stated this is made of wood, coated in a lacquer. One that is clearly easily dissolved by high proof liquor (The ones you would be using to make drinks) so I figured I would sand the mashing (part that does the pressing). After sanding the main surfaces I realized a problem, that the head of the muddler has rivets/dimples which are impossible to sand unless you have some time and a file. Long story short, I put it through the washing machine, then put it in some hot water, and washed it again and it seemed to do the trick! The head of the muddler is a much lighter color, but does the job as good as any. The reason why it got three stars is when I buy my tools they should come in perfect working order.

Totally stupid of me to buy one that is lacquered but that's on me, not the company. a few minutes with fine to medium grit sandpaper took care of that issue.
