Many of the other reviewers have had experience with these types of locks before, but this was my first time so my experience was a little different. Though I have used these locks before, I'd never installed one. The first thing I wish was different was that the hardware installation sheet had said, "Before installing, write down the programming code from the back of the lock". Perhaps I'm just stupid and did not read both instruction booklets completely before installing, but I figured I'd do the step-by-step hardware installation then read the programming information second (as I guessed it would have to be installed before it could be programmed). On page 11 of the User Guide, I was in for a shock when I learned that the code I needed was on the back of the installed lock. I had to take it off to get the code and put it back on. I simply did not know or guess that there would be a special code to activate it the first time. I thought it would be essentially "blank" until I entered my own code the first time.

Other than that, things went fairly smoothly. Even though I had never installed a door lock or handle before, the instructions were very clear and the lock fairly easy to install. There was a bit of fiddling with the wiring that connects the two door plates together as the wires seem to be fairly short. I was installing it alone so this made it a little harder to hold pieces up/on while trying to thread the wires through, but it was manageable even for a novice like me. As another reviewer mentioned, you only need one screwdriver to do it so those of us who are relying on a cheap Ikea toolkit can still manage.

The lock looks modern and sleek and the keypad has a nice feel to it.

Door Lock (5 stars)

The obvious benefit of this touchscreen lock is there are no keys to lock and no keyhole for an intruder to pick.

Some of the other benefits:

* The 9-volt battery is included, so there’s no need to buy one before installing this lock. The manufacturer says the battery will last 2 years, but it’s recommended that you change the battery every year, at the same time you change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

* If you forget to change your battery before it dies while the door is locked, there is a “battery jump” that allows you to connect a battery externally, allowing you to open the door (as long as you know one of the user codes). The instructions warn not to remove the old battery until the door is open.

* Easy to install. If you’ve ever installed a door knob, you’ll be able to install this. Just make sure to tuck the wire leading to the battery, so they will not be crimped. The user manual has pictures that show the proper way to do this.

* Has a programming code that is required to add each user code. It is recommended that you change the programming code (for the same reason you should always change the passkey for your router as soon as it’s installed -- to prevent people from using the factory default for unauthorized access).

* Allows you to add up to 19 individual user codes. If you have a babysitter, housekeeper, family member or guest (or other person that needs access to your house), simply program a new code for them (takes less than a minute). When they no longer need access to your house, it’s a simple matter to disable or remove their unique code.

Style Name: Accent LeverColor: Aged Bronze Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This was quick to install. If you've installed a door lock before, it assembles exactly the same except there is a little wire connector to plug in when the two halves come together. It is easy to install without even looking at the instructions.

Here is a picture of the lock at night. To see the buttons in the dark, feel your way around to the top of the keypad and then press the Schlage button. This shines a light on the keypad for about 3 seconds.

If the battery dies while you happen to be locked out, you can press a 9V battery against the front of the keypad where there are two bumps sticking out, and then enter the factory default user code. The instruction manual says to use an alkaline battery but I used an Energizer Advanced Lithium 9V battery and it works just fine. Lithium will last much longer.

You can quickly add new 4-digit user codes after entering the factory 6-digit programming code. There is a vacation mode that you can enable if you don't want someone guessing around at the codes while you're gone for an extended time. I don't think this lock is super secure because 4 digits is not that hard to track if someone is hiding in the bushes watching with binoculars as you enter the house. But for low security applications this is a very nicely designed lock that is very useful, for example, if you want to add a user code for the housekeeper or nanny.

This Schlage Touch Latitude Lever turned my front door from being a normal door knob with a lock into a vault door. This is a heavy duty door lever with a great touch pad lock that is very simple to use. Installation took my husband about 20 minutes and it fit our previous door knob fittings perfectly. It looks great-even on our country style door. This is a nice nickel finished piece that is solid and sturdy for everyday use. The keypad lock came with two pre-entered codes and 19 more can be programmed into the lock. My husband had a great time putting in a code for each member of the family so their own special codes will be easily remembered by all. My first thought with this type of lock is: what if someone forgets the code. But with everyone having a special code indicative of their own, they are not likely to forget it.

The key pad can also be charged with a nine volt battery should the battery run low, however there are indicators that tell you if the battery power is running low.

All in all, we really like this security lever. It looks great and is a wonderful security lock with special codes that can be programmed. It's easy to install and is durable to hold up to everyday wear and tear. I like that there are no keys to lose and the special codes can be made for everyone to easily remember. This lock also has a light for nighttime. When you press the Schlage logo on the lock, the keypad lights up. I can't say enough good about the quality and overall performance of this lock. It's great!
