This is an excellent dock for adding extra drives for a desktop, notebook, even for a Tivo. I have several and all work as expected for extra storage. Connected to a desktop, it easily allows for extra storage, I can mount and dismount drives as I wish. I've used 750GB as well as 1TB 3.5" drives. ESATA works wonderful, much faster than the USB, so I definitely recommend everyone to try to hook this up preferably via ESATA. One connected to my S3 Tivo, it expands our storage for recordings. I do not move or carry my drives around so I can save money because I can buy bare drives instead of portable drives with cases. Final note, I have not utilized the "Backup" button so I cannot speak for that function.

I use it for the esata to copy to offline storage my nightly backup files which are all on the order of 5-10 gig files. I achieve full sata speed which tends to be 70-110 mb/sec depending on the cylinders being used. HDtune shows the same benchmarking graph for a drive I had installed internally vs. when in the doc. The fastest is my 2tb seagate while a 300 gig maxtor is only half as fast - but it's the drive that's slow, not the dock.

The best I can get with USB is about 25-30 mb/sec, which is all I've ever got using usb drives on several machines. The limit is in the usb interface. A few seem to run at about 20 and the fastest at about 30. Having the usb is important since it works on any machine pretty much.

The one problem I've had is that I can't turn the unit on when I'm playing any sounds. It crashes my system. But this is likely my pci express x1 interface drivers for my esata card. I have a JMicron Technology Corp jmb36x card.

I did have to trim back the connector going to the esata card as mentioned in a comment. Apparently, this unit does not abide by the spec for esata cables which calls for a recessed female socket (which is designed with the external aspect of the interface in mind). Once I did that, it works reliably. Before I trimmed it, any movement of my computer would tend to dislodge the cable at the computer end.

It worked intermittenly when I received it. Sure enough, it stopped completely after 30 days. USB still works though. But then again, I didn't buy this for the USB connection...

UPDATE: Upgraded to 4 stars. The dock works. The user was the problem. I cloned a drive sitting in the dock and let Acronis auto-shutoff the computer. Subsequently the computer couldn't see the drive. It took me 4 days but finally realized Windows 7 did not auto-assign the newly cloned drive a drive letter. Manually assigned a drive letter and all is well.

The product still misses a star because of a design flaw. There's a large metal plate in the dock to give it some weight and stability. It is secured to the bottom panel with 2 tiny screws. The weight of the plate ripped the tiny screws from their mounts quite easily during shipping. I recieved this item with this metal plate sliding around inside the dock. Luckily it didn't damage any of the electronics. I opened the dock and secured the plate with some duct tape. It's fine now. This plate should have been secured with epoxy or double sided tape rather than tiny screws.

The Amazon description states a 3TB drive size max but I checked with the KingWin and they said it does indeed support the newest 6TB drives. They are right! I'm using it with a 6TB Seagate and it's working like a charm to back up a Drobo Thunderbolt RAID on a Mac Pro. The USB isn't as fast as a mating Thunderbolt dock would be but, since this will be used for periodic cloning using SuperDuper, it's not an issue and the price for the EZ-Dock is hard to beat. Count me very satisfied.

By the way, I had intended to use the 6TB Seagate in a NewerTech Voyager Q Firewire Drive Dock (running through a Belkin Thunderbolt Express that provides the Firewire 800 port) but it would only format to 1.6TB using that dock. The EZ-Dock solved that formatting problem too along with good USB 3 performance.

A few months ago I thought my hard drive died in my iMac. It was only one year old. Apple sent out a recall but I thought I had time to get it repaired before it went out. I took it up to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and they said it was completely unrecoverable. I asked them if I could keep the old drive but they said "that is not their policy." I told them it had something very valuable on it. So they allowed me to take it. I shopped around to see if I could find something to access the bad hard drive. I came across this Dock on Amazon and thought I would give it a try. I was totally shocked! I plugged it in and it started reading the drive. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it. I use it as a back up drive. I had several other drives that I also thought were bad and they also came back to life. This dock is amazing! I don't know if it will work on every drive but I will never take Apple's advice again.
