Color: Condiment Trio - Cedar Paddle (Traditional Bowls)
I love having guests over for happy hour, drinks and appies, and so was really excited about these little bowls. The bowls nest so comfortably in the paddle that there is no need to worry that they will slip as you carry them from kitchen to living room. The bowls are the perfect size for guacamole, sour cream and salsa, a traditional trio for nacho chips.
The only thing that surprised me was the color change. The bowls were a neutral grey when they arrived and then turned dark black when I put the dip in them. I assumed that they would turn back to grey after washing, but they didn't. They were mottled and not quite so pretty. I did a quick search online about caring for soapstone and learned that I had to treat them with oil to ensure that they were one uniform color. They are now dark black, more beautiful than the original grey. They are dramatically striking and show off the dips even more elegantly. I can't wait to feature my red eggplant hummus next weekend.

This cedar plank and trio of soapstone bowls looks very unique, but when opening it for the first time I was a little surprised at how small the bowls were. I used it for dips (queso, guacamole, salsa) and while it worked fine I did have to refill the bowls a few times. When the bowls are dry they are a lovely mottled gray color and when they are wet or damp they turn solid black. The cedar plank is thick and sturdy and the depressions where the bowls sit are deep. You can carry the loaded bowls on the plank without worrying about them falling off.
But the cedar plank that came with my set had some minor damage. It looks like a nail head was pressed into the soft wood leaving a bunch of 1/4 depressions. There are about 7 circular depressions in one area. It is not noticeable when the bowls are in place, so I didn’t bother returning it.
So a very unique and lovely set, but before purchasing measure out 3 ozs of dips/condiments and see if the bowls will hold enough to meet your needs.
