There is no such thing as "the" perfect smartphone since each individual uses them differently and will have different requirements or preferences. So before I get to the details, I'll let you know my own. I've used iPhones for most of my life, but recently got bored with iOS and went on a long, expensive, chronically and unreasonably dissatisfied hunt for more interesting phones in the Android world. I value a well-balanced phone with:

1) Clean, quick, uncluttered software with a pleasing user interface
2) A camera that can stand-alone as my one-and-only camera (low grain, great exposure, decent color reproduction, decent HD video)
3) Premium build quality that can please an Apple-seduced ex-iPhoner (feel-in-hand is especially important to me)
4) A bright, colorful, and sharp screen
5) Full day battery life

I also care about durability, prompt software updating, and accessory availability. I use the Sony Xperia Z3 as my go-to phone, and have also recently owned the iPhone 5s, LG G2, Google Nexus 5, HTC One M8, and Sony Xperia Z2. My wife uses the Samsung S5.

I bought the Motorola Moto X pure, unlocked version through the Motorola moto-builder site. As a disclaimer got a Bamboo back and Blue trim, so be warned that while I've felt the leather in stores I had a very slightly different experience. I've used the phone for two weeks.

Okay, on to the review!

1) Software: 100/100.

I've never awarded a 100% to any phone for any feature. Until now. Motorola and Google absolutely nailed it. First, you'll get the phone at Android 4.4 KitKat, but 5.0 Lollipop is already out for the Moto X and the phone can (and should) be updated immediately.

I fell in love with the first generation Moto X. It was the first Android device that swayed me away from an iPhone history going back to the original 2G model. The new one is even better. The screen just pops, and the extra size is very nice while still being able to be used one-handed. The upgraded processor definitely makes the usability flow much smoother, and the upgraded camera is very welcome. The fit and finish of the device is excellent. I highly recommend this device.

Allright, so here it is folks, just started using MotoX 2nd generation, 32 GB storage with turbo charger. Bought it from Motorola directly, unlocked, contract free, aka Moto pure. It comes with a T mobile Sim, which I discarded and replaced with an ATT sim. Registration on ATT network was fast. Once registered with ATT network, I had to transfer all my data from Apple cloud to my phone. This is when I started to have issues as motorola mobility was not working properly. The site was supposedly down, migration assistant that came on the phone was having issue with displaying the log in screen from Apple cloud. Eventually that was done with what seems like luck.
The phone itself is superb, solid feel very quick and stylish. It came loaded with Android kit kat (4.4.4) that I quickly upgraded to Lollipop (5.0). I have tested the phone voice which is good, voice commands, the facial recognition, the hand wave commands which work near flawlessly. Notifications work in the back ground in an unobtrusive manner. Lollipop is a well designed software that lets you organize many critical functions (like battery management, location services, flashlight etc.) with one swipe from the top. I have not tested payment system yet nor prioritization of notifications yet. I am not a heavy user of video nor camera, because I use a Nikon for taking pictures. That said, the AMOLED screen is superb. For my use, battery life is very good (about a day and then some). Love the pin function for oft use apps. The software allows one to review the history in one click. The physical size of the phone is 0.2 inches larger than the I phone 6 but the screen size is 0.5 inch larger (5.2 inch vs. 4.7 inch for I phone6). Single hand use is adequate for someone with average hand size.

The camera is really, really bad. I thought this phone was the game changer after reading about it on Gizmodo, but the camera produces really grainy, not well lit photos. Also, I went from a Samsung Galaxy S3 to this, and I really missed the creature comforts that are commonplace on Samsung phones. I ended up returning this and getting a Galaxy S6; I've never been happier.

Love this phone. with reservations. I got the Moto G 2nd gen a few months before and I think
it is the best phone for it's price range. But Amazon sold the X for a penny and I couldn't
resist. I love everything about the X and I would marry it if it also has the G's micro sd expansion.
That's all.

I had this phone for 6 months when the keyboard all of a sudden wouldn't stay open. Never had a problem before. I contacted a rep via chat. Everything she told me to try was useless, so while she was typing I found a tutorial in some forum online that solved the problem. (I can't remember what I did. Something about clearing a cache.) Anyway, I thought my problem was solved until error messages started popping up. Something about processes and various apps that had stopped working. No service was available at that point because it was New Year's Day, so I tried to find a solution online. I tried all sorts of things--clearing caches, deleting apps, etc. Finally, I reset my phone to factory condition. Then when I turned it on it would get stuck on the Motorola screen and the battery would drain rapidly. On Jan 2, I chatted with a rep again and explained the situation. A couple hours later, I delivered the phone to FedEx to be shipped to Texas for repair.

Jan 7 - Received email stating my phone arrived in their warehouse.

Fast forward to Jan 14, still no phone. So I call...

Rep #1 (heavy accent & hard to understand) - Tells me it's going to be at least another week because they don't have my phone in stock. I ask for clarification because my phone was supposed to be repaired, not replaced. What does he mean it's not in stock? He gives a blah blah blah response, so I ask to talk to someone else.

Rep #2 (even heavier accent & harder to understand) - Asks if I can be put on hold. I laugh and mention that it's funny how I just got put on hold by first rep and now I immediately have to be put on hold again. So she tells me she won't put me on hold. Instead she'll lay her headset down so I can hear everything. What the?
