The self-titled album by the group July is one of the unheralded albums in British psychedelia from the late '60s. This album, "The Second Of July", has demos and unreleased tracks recorded just prior to the official album's release. The sound is very decent/good, and there's a booklet that tells a bit about the band and their music.

July's sound was made up of British psychedelia/garage rock/studio effects/odd instrumentation/English whimsy. This album has that same sound and feel of their official album. Basically if you like that album, this collection of demos and unreleased tunes is worth owning. There's nothing truly startling here, just another look into the band's slightly twisted way with lyrics/instrumentation/arrangements that echo the finished album's sound. You may find that this collection of songs is worth more than 3 "stars"--to each his own. And I must confess that I sometimes feel that this weird little band had more going for it than many non-fans think. Tony Duhig (guitar) and Jon (sometimes "John") Fields are both here before they formed Jade Warrior (another good little band that released some good music back then), along with vocalist Tom Newman and the rest of the band.

If you're a fan of the band's official album ("July") you'll probably want to check out this collection of early recordings. I've always had a soft spot for their album, so I like this '67 collection of demos/unreleased tunes. Plus there seems to be a slightly different feel to some of these tracks that's missing from the finished tunes on their official album. There's a feel of go-for-it confidence on this set of tunes that's sometimes missing form the finished songs. This is another look into that whole weird era of English psyche when anything was possible, from a band who only released one album of British psyche. Pretty cool in a small way--especially if you're a fan.
