After a great year with the unexpected blockbuster success of Disney's Frozen, its 3X platinum soundtrack, and her sleeper top 5 3X platinum hit "Let It Go" from the film, a return to Broadway in "If/Then" whose cast album debuted at #19 on the Billboard 200, and an Oscar performance that was well-remembered, not even for an unfortunate bad note at the end but a hilarious blunder when John Travolta introduced her, Idina Menzel caps her year with her first holiday album, which became her highest-peaking album as a solo artist on the Billboard 200 when it debuted at #13 on the Billboard 200 charts, and hopefully will climb even higher when those holiday season sales kick in and hopefully promotion starts.

The album, produced by Walter Afansieff, who co-produced Barbra Streisand's latest hit album (and several others in the past) and many of Celine Dion and Mariah Carey's 1990's hits, features a nice mix of secular holiday songs, a couple of religious ones, and a few covers of songs that aren't necessarily holiday-themed but fit in nicely. The arrangements are quite good in general. A few, as is typical of anything Afansieff is involved with, can get overly produced and saccharine, but Idina's amazing iconic voice is fortunately never fighting to be heard over them. (A testament not only to her talent, but also the sound mixers on this CD, who didn't allow her to be drowned out by the production.) Arrangements range from contemporary pop ballad styles such as "The Christmas Song" that would feel at home on Celine Dion's Christmas album from 1998 to more classic and timeless arrangements such as "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and "December Prayer," the album's sole original, co-written by Idina.

Broadway fans have been in love with Idina for years, but timing couldn't be better for a holiday album from the Frozen superstar. This CD is full of warmth and cheer, glorious vocals and simple, classic productions. It does not attempt to reinvent age-old yuletide carols and the productions offer little imagination, but thanks to Idina's flawless voice, the music does not come across as overly boring.

There aren't any tracks that I would skip, but these are my favorites:

- Do You Hear What I Hear
- The Christmas Song
- When You Wish Upon a Star
- Holly Jolly Christmas

OVERALL: Idina Menzel could sing the phone book and it would be breathtaking, so rest assured that your favorite holiday tunes get beautiful renditions. My only critique is that the productions are somewhat blasé. I understand that the vocals are the highlight of the show and a simple piano backdrop highlights them even more, but I would still prefer more impressive music to accompany that voice. Amy Grant and Sandi Patty's holiday albums have stood the test of time because the music is as festive and immersive as their vocals. This album feels like it could have been completed in a weekend, with or without a rehearsal. Nonetheless, 'Holiday Wishes' will probably be my favorite Christmas album this year and I do highly recommend it.

Her vocals, of course, brilliant. Production values are fine.

But most of the tunes are a bit soul-less. Some even make me think they should be background music in an office.

She shines best on the original track of December Prayer and River (of Sarah McLachlan fame) where she emotes beautifully.

I've been a fan of Idina's for almost 10 years and I never thought she would do a Christmas album but I am so happy that she did. She did grow up in a Jewish family but I assume she probably celebrates both holidays. There aren't an Hanukkah songs on here but there are some beautiful Christmas covers on "Holiday Wishes"

1. Do You Hear What I Hear? - 5/5 I've grown fond of this song over the years and it's a nice to open the album. The songs goes well with Idina's belting voice.

2. The Christmas Song - 5/5 Another one of my favorite Christmas songs. Idina's version has a slightly different beat than other versions I've heard, which is nice to be different than just a repeat of the Nat King Cole version.

3. Baby, It's Cold Outside - 4/5 I like this song a little less just because it's been a little overdone in the past few years. But this version has an edge because it's a duet with Michael Buble (I'm a fan of his) and of the little ad-libs that they do in the song.

4. Have Yourself A Merry Christmas - 5/5 A gorgeous version of this song. It has a slow jazz kind of feel to it.

5. All I Want For Christmas - 5/5 Because Mariah Carey's original version is so well-known and loved, I was unsure how Idina's version would go. But I think I like her version more than any other version (other than Mariah's, of course). She certainly has the vocal chops to pull it off. And she brings a different beat and vibe to it so it's not exactly like Mariah's.

6. What Are You Doing New Year's Eve - 4/5 This isn't my favorite holiday song but I still like the song. It's kind of bluesy and melancholy.

7. December Prayer- 4/5 A song that Idina co-wrote. It's a haunting song and I have a feeling it will grow on me.
