Every couple of years Fisher-Price redesigns its products, with what seems to be more of an eye on profits than child development, and the latest iteration of the Little People "Farm" is a classic example of that practice at work. Previous versions of this toy were more detailed, and had several points at which the child could make contact to create sound, and one of the cool things was that those contact points corresponded with certain stalls meant for the specific animals whose sounds emitted from them. Kind of educational, with the cow going "moo", chicken clucking, etc. This version has only one point that creates sounds in a seemingly (at least to a toddler) random order, with animal sounds and music emanating from the same cluster of sound holes in the floor of the barn.

The chute/silo offers "drop-through fun", but it's so open that there's almost no suspense for the toddler in terms of trying to figure out where an item might have gone. I mean, they could drop one of the animals from a table and get the same kind of fun. But hey, at least if your kid puts your phone in there, you won't have any trouble finding it.

Much lighter than any of the previous versions, but it does close up nicely for storage and transportation. Doesn't *lock* closed too well though, so that whenever you pick the thing up, it flies open and all those people and animals stored inside go flying.

I'm also not too keen on the redesign of the Little People themselves. The farmer is taller and thinner than previous Little People, making him a little less perfect for little hands. And what's with his Justin Bieber hairstyle?

It's a Little People set though. A staple of childhood, I suppose.

I have 3 kids ages 2 (twins) and almost 4. When this arrived, my oldest could barely contain himself wanting to play with it (I made him wait a day and he asked every chance he got if he could play with it yet). Once I did let him play with it, he played for about 15 min before he moved on to something else (typical of his age). My daughter then played with it for a while followed by my younger son. My oldest does imaginative play with it, my daughter likes making the animal sounds, and my younger son likes putting things inside of places and taking them out. Each has their own way of playing with it.

We also have another version of the barn -- Fisher-Price Little People Fun Sounds Farm. I prefer this one because it has more animals and fewer small parts (the fun sounds farm has fence pieces that you can link together and hook up with other sets). This one also closes together so you can keep all the pieces together much easier. I let my son carry it up the stairs and he had no problem and all the animals stayed in the barn. It closes together well enough, but I wish I could lock it closed so that it doesn't accidentally open up on me, which it did when I went to put it away.

The other barn gives the age range from 12m-4yrs and this one is 12m-5yrs and I think that 4 is probably a better top range. My older son likes playing with it, but I imagine that he will move on from it in the next few months. My son is also more into trains, cars, and batman, so those hold his interest more. For a child who loves farms and animals it will last a little longer.

Our son just crossed the 22 month mark, and has had access to the Little People Animal Friends Farm Toy for almost a month now. To be honest, when we first removed the set from its packaging, which was a struggle, I was sure that this would get about five minutes of play time and then get lost at the bottom of the toy chest. To my surprise, he has actually played with it for at least a few moments just about every day since he got it. He is a fan of mixing and matching the figurines that came with the set with some of his favorite dinosaur toys in and among the various stalls in the barn.

The set can, essentially, be arranged in two ways. The first is as a cross-section type diorama, splitting the barn right down the center at a hinge that requires some assembly with a Phillips head screwdriver. The second is as an enclosed barn environment. The fact that he can arrange the toys in their respective pens while the barn is split open, and then close it up and carry it around a bit really seems to be the most pleasing aspect of this toy for our little one. He does also like to drop things down the silo but, as any parent or guardian might imagine, this can become a bit of a headache as things that were not intended to be used with this toy get stuck halfway down and inspire a meltdown until rectified.

The barn also makes various animal noises when specific gates are opened. It's a nice touch, particularly because the batteries which operate the sound box were included and preinstalled, but, for whatever reason, our son isn't that impressed with this particular feature.

I can see him outgrowing this set in the near future but, for the time being, it is a sturdy toy that he seems to be enjoying enough on a regular basis for us to justify keeping it in the everyday play toy box.
