This review is for Blue Buffalo brand "Blue Bones" size small. My Dog is 16lbs so could use either the mini size (5lbs - 15lbs) or the small size (15lbs - 25lbs). Since he is very active I give him the small size. He really enjoys these bones, and gets one every day.

I love that these are 100% digestible and won't cause intestinal blockage like rawhide products.

These are not long term chews, like raw beef bones, or "Kong" chews. My dog usually prances around with the bone for a while before eating it, but when he settles down to chew it he has it eaten within five or so minutes. He is not a power chewer. Do supervise your dog when giving these as some dogs may attempt to swallow the pieces whole instead of chewing them to an appropriate size before swallowing.

As soon as you open the package of these Blue Bones, your dogs will come running. At least mine did. They love these little bones. They're tasty, and they smell yummy.

But I ordered them because I'd read---somewhere I can't remember where---that they were "long lasting." I'm sorry to say, they aren't. My dogs snarf them down in less than 5 minutes. They're a great treat.

Will I order them again? I'm not sure. What I'm really looking for is something that smells as good as these bones, is as healthy as these bones are, but something that will keep dogs that love to chew, entertained for more than 5 minutes. I wish Blue Buffalo would collaborate with Nylabone. THEN we'd have something WORTH whatever they want to charge!

Ok, I have to say that my yorkies' breath smells better (It doesn't smell like a rotting carcass anymore!) and we will definitely order them again! He did not choke on them either. Just a tip-for those of you who order snacks order the ones that are made AND processed in the US-NOT China! Too many treats from overseas are killing our pets. Also, buy dog food that the packaging says it was processed in the US. ALWAYS check the packaging!!

When Bear arrived 3+ years ago, I was a new dog Mom. I started using Blue Bones dental chews immediately to entice Bear into his crate at night. I have been pleased that these seem to be effective because in three plus years, the vets Bear has seen have not recommended a dental cleaning. Bear has amazing jaw strength so over time I have had to remove the Himalayan chews and dehydrated sweet potato chews from his diet. This is because he can break off large chunks with sharp edges and does not chew them before swallowing. I have never given him animal bones for the same reason. Bear loves his blue bones and his Mom does as well. Finally, although the bones are a bit pricey, not only is dental cleaning expensive but as with any surgical procedure, the anesthetic involves risk.

My challenge has been to fine a healthy chew-fest for my Labradoodle pup. He devours anything he is not supposed to have
and shows no interest in any of the Nylabone, Kong, Buddy or any other "safer" chew toy on the market. Both he and my adult Corgi loved these Blue Bones. The problem is that they each chomped the regular sized Blue Bone down in about 10 minutes. I would not describe either dog as an aggressive chewer. These bones are pricey at a little over two bucks a pop so I guess I'll keep looking.

Our dog, a 45lb spaniel-setter rescue, is about 14 years old and she has been diabetic for the last few years. It took us a long time to get things in order - finally ignoring the vet - and stopping the (corn and grain-filled) "Diabetic Friendly" Science Diet, and other prescription kibbles, that gave her the runs and replacing all her diet and treats with only grain-free versions.

With being blind, old and creaky, diabetic-- we try to give our sweetie some goodies to bring her some bits of "the good life" and these bones - while expensive - are one of those pleasures. Here are the reasons we love these bones for our dog:

1. They don't make our diabetic, grain-sensitive dog sick. Even the chews with rice flour now give our dog the runs. These (and Zukes Z Bones) are the only ones that she seems to like that are grain free and don't make her ill.

2. Made in the USA! With all the scandals of bad pet products coming from China, it is nice to know that these are made here in the USA.

3. A great, meaty scent (and I assume, flavor!) that really attracts my dog's attention. She prefers these to the fruit flavored Zukes, though she went through a phase where she really liked Zukes, too, she always prefers these to Zukes.

Things we wish were different? Or things to consider?

1. These are costly for something my dog plows through, but she loves them and does well with them. As they are one of the few treats we can give her that doesn't throw her blood sugar or give her indigestion, these chews a regular in our dog pantry.

***Oh, and three words: Subscribe And Save! We pay about half as much for these bones on Amazon (with the S&S program) as these retail for at pet stores.Read more ›
