I am, as one can read from my previous reviews of Dell's XPS 12 series, a fan of these convertible laptops, which offer a touchscreen/tablet mode as well as a full fledged laptop mode with a full sized attached keyboard.

While the XPS 12 was targeted to the premium ultrabook segment in price and performance, this Insprion 13 700 series aims at a lower price point, and makes some concessions as a result. Most obviously, the construction, which uses a sturdy rubberized finish plastic instead of metal, and the hard drive in the cheaper models, which is a hybrid mechanical (Seagate) drive. That said, the case is actually quite aesthetically pleasing and nice to the touch, and the hard drive is easily replaced. (More on that below).

Dell offers this laptop in several configurations. The important specs that are common across all the configurations:

13.2 inch touchscreen
Haswell processor/Intel HM87 chipset (better battery life than earlier generations)
Intel integrated 4400 HD graphics (good enough for most purposes except high end gaming)

I received my computer yesterday, and so far I am very happy with the purchase. I wanted something portable that I could take with me when I travel, and I really liked the 2-in-1 concept. I don't think this will replace my 7 inch tablet, but it was not meant to. I wanted something that was Windows (or Mac OS) so that I could play games that are not available on a tablet. I also wanted a real keyboard. The keyboard, trackpad, and touch screen all work great. The hinges on the display seem very solid, and I like the four options for positioning the screen. I used the display mode to watch a movie last night while working on my work computer. The included stylus is a nice feature. I use one with my tablet sometimes, but it is better to have something that has a home in the computer. The performance has been great, and I highly recommend this model to anyone. The only drawback is the size of the screen. If you really want something bigger, you will be disappointed...but I think this is an ideal size that balances portability with size. The price is much better than most ultrabooks and is less than similar models from another brand. I originally considered swapping out the drive for a solid state drive, but so far the standard drive that comes with it has worked well enough.

One month in and I am still very happy. I have not had any of the screen issues one person mentioned, and no problems with the track pad like others have complained about. I would buy it again.

This is a great laptop tablet combo for the value. It is light and fast. BUT it suffers from "ghost" touches. Once in a while the touch screen goes crazy with out anyone touching the screen. I thought I got a bad one so I was planning on getting a replacement but others have the same problem as well if you search the internet. I believe it is a problem with the touch screen itself because when it goes crazy, if I flex the screen a bit it will stop. I think Dell needs to make a harder LCD back cover because the screen is flexing too much when opening and closing the lid which is causing these "ghost" touches. I would have given this 10 stars if it did not suffer from the "ghost" touches. I really liked it and I am really disappointed that I have to return this.

And now, the review!:

I have previously reviewed an older Dell 2-in-1 and was not too thrilled with the design.

This new Dell 2-in-1, however, is a whole different story and extremely refreshing. In fact, I would say this is a competitor to the Surface Pro 3 and Yoga 3 Pro - but Dell offers a similar experience for much less money.

Dell made some outstanding design choices with the Dell Insprion 13 7000 Series. First off, is the luxurious feel - the material it is made of feels almost velvety in texture and appears to be some plastic/rubber hybrid. If you have ever held a Lumia 1020, the texture of this Dell is very similar to that. The design is very attractive as well with tapered edges that give the laptop a premium look - again resembling the Lumia 1020 ironically.

The screen is a touchscreen that works quite well and has 180 degree hinges similar to the Lenovo Yoga. This allows the screen to be positioned in many ways or completely folded over to be used as a tablet. The tablet cannot be detached and it is too heavy to hold in one hand, but it works well for lap or table usage. Picture quality is outstanding and has some of the brightest and crispest images I've seen on a 2-in-1.

The keyboard is backlit and both it and the touchpad is very responsive. Dell really nailed it with the design.Read more ›
