I've tested & reviewed over a dozen electric toothbrushes, including: the Phillips Sonicare HC3631 ($15), the Sonicare Xtreme 3000 ($45), the Sonicare Diamond Clean ($189), the CyberSonic (1st Generation, $120), and the CyberSonic 3 ($65). I've used each one for at least a year.

There are little differences among the different models/brands. They come with different amenities (battery powered vs charging base, types of attachments, etc). All of the models I listed outperform traditional electric toothbrushes exponentially (the cheap kinds from the store). I truly believe everyone should have a modern electric toothbrush (i.e., above 10,000 strokes per minute). Further, I believe this is *essential* for young children (mine are ages 2 & 4, and they love using electric toothbrushes).

Aside from the amenities, I notice very little difference in performance among all the models I've used & tested. From now on I'm getting the $15 Sonicare HX3631, because I believe it's the best bang for my buck.

In fact am beginning to wonder if the HX3631 has the same motor as the more expensive units - to me, it feels only slightly slower than the 31,000 strokes per minute. Could that be attributed to the AA batteries vs the built-in batteries? Even if it's less power, I doubt my teeth know the difference. I've never had a cavity, by the way.

I much prefer using my own AA rechargeable batteries (like the $15 Sonicare HX3631) over the models with built-in batteries and chargers. The built-in batteries on the more expensive units do last a very long time (at least 1-2 years), but when they die, you must either buy a replacement or "hack" a new makeshift battery.

I have used quite a few powered tooth brushes, including the original Sonicare when it first came out.

A brief background on how a Sonic toothbrush works. The primary scrubbing action of the bristles rubbing on your tooth does most of the cleaning, as with any toothbrush, but a sonic toothbrush also agitates liquids in your mouth (saliva/water) and those actually help clean in areas where the bristles can't reach, this is called fluid dynamic cleansing.

This brush is the cheapest Sonicare toothbrush available, and is probably closer to a normal powered toothbrush than a sonic toothbrush. The book didn't say vibrations per second, but I think I found on the internet that it was about 16,000, or about half of the better Sonicare toothbrushes. This will reduce the secondary fluid dynamic cleansing, but remember, most of the cleaning is from the brushing action anyway.

For actual use of the product, the batteries were easy to install, and the toothbrush is easy enough to operate, but I hate using it. It feels like it is going to vibrate my lips off, chatters against my teeth, and is generally uncomfortable. It works well so I still give it 4 stars. I prefer the Waterpik nano sonic toothbrush in the same price range. Feels more like a sonic toothbrush, more subtle vibrations.

I'm a long time Sonicare user and own at least 4 of their toothbrushes at various price points, all the way from a bulky $40 one to the pricey Philips Sonicare HX9110/02 Flexcare Platinum Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush model. I keep one at the office and one at my parents' when I visit. I have also tried Braun Oral-B in the past, but did not like how noisy they were.

The Sonicare models vary according to price but the rule is, as in life, the more you pay the fancier it gets. Mechanically, however, they are about the same. The motor inside vibrates the brushhead at a high speed. The higher end ones are more compact and nicer looking, come with their own charging stand, some with travel cases, quadrant timer, extra brushes, and some even do UV disinfecting. This one has none of that because it's battery operated (2 AA). It's your starter brush, and good for introducing younger family members to the Sonicare brand, or for keeping at the office as a spare. The primary advantage of being battery operated, aside from the very obvious lower cost of adoption, is potentially extended durability. In my video, you can see that my more expensive rechargeable toothbrush has stopped working because the sealed batteries no longer charge. With a brush like this, you can simply change out the batteries whenever you like.

The bottom pulls out for the battery compartment, and a rubber gasket ring around the receptacle keeps moisture out. The heads are interchangeable between models. The included head is a bit short, but you can buy longer ones. They are standard to the Sonicare line.

While I'm a big fan of the other Sonicare toothbrushes, this one falls short. I was looking for a travel toothbrush and thought that at 80% cheaper than the "regular" Sonicare models and reviewers saying there was very little difference, this would be a great purchase. That was far from the truth. This Powerup model has a lower brush per minute speed and makes up for it with larger brush strokes, effectively rattling your jaw. I used this brush once and will send it back to Philips because of the extreme amount that it jams my teeth and jaw. I've been using a Sonicare for about 10 years and have never had a negative thing to say about the quality of the toothbrush or the brushing, but the Powerup is horrendous.

To be clear, there is no price that this toothbrush is good at, it's simply a bad product.
