Throughout my undergrad years and even for a couple years after undergrad, I used a first-generation Incase Campus backpack. It held up fine and will likely last for a while more. I wanted to try Cocoon's Grid-It system and decided on the Recess over the Graphite and Slim, the other 2 backpacks with Cocoon's Grid-It system. I figured I wouldn't need the overall capacity of the Graphite, but I may carry things that would be thicker than what the Slim could hold. You do give up some Grid-It capacity on the Recess; there seems to be about half the Grid-It capacity compared to the Graphite & Slim. I saw the Recess as a good middle ground between those 2, and the Recess is also the cheapest of Cocoon's Grid-It backpacks. There are other backpacks out there for better prices, and you're paying for benefits of the Grid-It system if you buy these backpacks.

To me, the backpack has more capacity than it seems. I was able to move everything I had in my Campus backpack over to the Recess and still had a little more room left over, so the capacity should be adequate for most.
There are two zippered compartments:
(1) Small - contains the Grid-It system and a pocket behind the Grid-It that will hold a full-size iPad/tablet.
(2) Large - has two pockets - one is rated to hold up to a 15-inch laptop; the other is a little smaller, probably for a folder or if you rather store your iPad/tablet there.
There are also 2 external elastic pockets, one on each side of the backpack, for holding miscellaneous things, such as a water bottle, umbrella, or something you want to quickly stow away.

The Grid-It system can be very useful if you like staying organized. Once you have your preferred setup, your belongings will usually stay in place.Read more ›

Nice and slim - perfect for my daily commute. Fits my macbook, my lunch, and some notebooks/tablets comfortably. Grid-it front panel is great for keeping things in their place, and there's a pocket behind that for more storage. Not the most waterproof backpack i've owned, but "water-resistant" is fair to say.

I love the bag. I am a high school student and it fits a pencil case, 1 binder, 1 text book. I love the organization system. One thing to note is the top ripped inside the bag in only 3 months, HOWEVER I emailed the company and they instantly sent me another one. Absolutely amazing customer service. Other companies should be as easy to deal with as they are.
