Not recommended if you have children. We've only had these for 3 months and our 8 and 4 year olds stained them within the first month. Yes, they were wiped off, but those yellow and pink stains you see in the picture on both sides of the mat don't budge. Too expensive for that.

These are pretty and durable. I ordered six hoping these would be a long term, sturdy attractive solution to my placemat problem. However, I put one in the sink to be washed for a couple of hours. It touched some standing water soaking a lasagna pan. Now, I cannot get out the tomato sauce stain no matter how hard I scrub. So much for the sturdy and attractive part of the solution. Anyhow, if you get these, be careful not to let them soak in dirty water and clean them immediately after eating, least they stain from spills, etc.

I'll cut to the chase - these will have to be less expensive before I'll be buying a full set, but this is probably the nicest trendy pricey eco-buzzword-marketed home product that I've seen so far this decade. A placement made of silicone makes So Much Sense that I fully expect these to travel the usual migratory route from Restoration Hardware and Williams-Sonoma type venues to retailers with a broader (and less spend-y) customer demographic.

I love using this. Absolutely. Everything (except knives and fine china) should be able to go in the dishwasher, and like the silicone oven gloves that are the *only* kind of gloves or potholders I use anymore, this placemat is built to weather the heavy-duty dish cycle. For that matter, most of the time you can just wipe them down and there are *no* crevices to catch spilled food or beverages. I have several lovely fabric placemat sets and to be honest, these are a pain. I worry about stains that might not come out, and the ironing isn't convenient either. So yes, if I could do it all over again today, I'd have *these* on my bridal registry and consider them a wise investment. (Keep kids with sharp implements away from them and I'll bet they last close to forever. Silicone, even in a thin sheet, is deceptively tough.)

I've viewed a lot of the designs for these placemats from Modern-Twist and the "Linen" isn't my absolute favorite, probably because the print pattern is somewhat enlarged. To me, it doesn't look like linen so much as really sheer, big-weave cheesecloth. It's still visually striking, but I'm not quite a modernist - and there are any number of patterns in this line that would go better with eclectic or semi-traditional décor.Read more ›

Having done actual research on the best place mats for kids (I know, weird...it's a problem, I'm working on it) after getting fed up with hard to clean mats, I tried one of the Modern-twist kids' silicone mats, and immediately bought two more for our other kids. It was that good, basically the holy grail of kid place mats - completely heat resistant, fun, doesn't slide around on the table, and most importantly SO easy to clean.

This version, obviously not a kid specific model, is actually not as good, only because the silicone used is quite a bit more slippery than the other three we have from the same company. I love the idea of using silicone mats for all of us, including adults, but the slippage on this one is just a bit much IMO, especially when we know the company makes decidedly NON-slippery silicone mats.

Not sure if it's designed that way, or maybe a different grade silicone, but if these had the same grip as the kids version from the same company, easy 5 stars (as they got).

I cannot highly recommend the kid versions enough if you are a parent of wee ones...yes they are spendy, but oh so worth that extra cost when it comes to cleaning (and keeping spills on the mat instead of the table).

Having said that, I can still recommend this mat as compared to normal, non-silicone mats for the heat resistance and cleanability alone (and really, compared to all my other "adult" mats, this one is still grippier than those).

UPDATE: After a year of heavy use, this now has a couple of holes in it, and my initial complaints stand - this is just not the same quality as the kid mats that this company makes.Read more ›

I know it is made of silicone thus the sticky surface but it is still worth noting that the stickiness makes brushing off crumbs, for example, almost impossible.

This has to be one of the dumbest purchases I have made. The price does not justify what you get. I can't hate the product since it seems like it is good quality, but I do hate myself for spending as much as I did on it, so I give it 2 stars......and give myself -5 stars for buying it.

My only wish is that I'd get at least two placemats for the $20 price tag instead of JUST ONE, otherwise I can't find a thing wrong with it. I've just about gone silicone on everything from cake pans and cookie sheets to hot pads and trivets. (FYI, you can't use this placemat as a trivet because it lets the heat through and that's not a good thing when you are trying to protect a surface!). I started having fun with this placemat (since it's a little see through) and placed it over various colored fabrics. I liked the results! On its own, it is still pretty and goes with any decor with its bluish-grey/tan undertones. It says to keep sharp objects away, but I just had to find out if the silicone is self healing like a lot of items out there. Sadly, it is not, but it did take a lot of effort to cut it with a very sharp Cutco knife. So at least an accidental slip of a knife or poke with a fork won't hurt it. On my solid oak table, it is a little slippery/moveable compared to having a cloth tablecloth under it. Still, it doesn't go flying all over the place like some other versions do. I also love that pet hair doesn't stick to it! So much easier to clean since you can toss it in the dishwasher or simply wipe it off. However, as much as I love it, I can't get my fingers to click "buy" and order seven more to fit my table. Somehow, I just can't see "Honey, I hope you don't mind but I spent $140 on placemats today!" going over really well with my spouse.
