When I first read about the ExpoDisc, I wondered how in the WORLD it could work.. You know, really "work" at creating perfect white balance for a photographer. I tend to be a more visual learner, so before purchasing this product a few weeks ago, I went to town searching for information on the ExpoDisc process.

After researching, I purchased, and upon receiving, I am absolutely thrilled with its performance with the Sony A77. Not only is it super simple to use and maneuver, I am also so impressed with the outcome of my images after ED'ing my white balance. Now I can create custom white balance and get a perfect image.. Every time!

I love that it is encouraged to purchase an ED for the size of your largest lens. I actually purchased a size up from mine and with the included carrying case and handy lanyard strap, there won't be any issues of misplacement.

The ExpoDisc process is so easy. Access your camera's custom white balance function and turn your lens focus to manual. With the ExpoDisc in place, check your exposure, then shoot from your model's perspective (if possible). Afterwards, simply set your custom white balance using the data from the image shot (and don't forget to turn your lens back to AF, if necessary). I would encourage anyone who struggles with white balance or wants to learn more about white balance to give the ExpoDisc a try... It's such a small investment for such an amazing little piece of equipment!

I use this product on the majority of my shoots, with usually pleasing results. It is better than relying on the camera's white balance. However there are 2 instances where it will not work well.
1. If you have an on camera flash. You need to point the camera at the light source in this case the light source is on the camera...they say you can point you camera at a white surface bounce the flash then try to get a reading. But that can be tricky outdoor and indoors if your surface is not perfectly white the you ll have a color cast.
2. If you are late in the afternoon in a big shade area on a sunny day, where you can't see the light source. Such as behind a big building. Taking the reading of the blue sky will give you the wrong white balance, as well as taking a reading by pointing the camera around...In cloudy days things work better.

In other words if you can't point this thing at the light source(s), you are out of luck...

I knew I would love this product. I heard about it, I read about it, I watched videos about it, and I priced it. I generally shoot jpg because I don't do a lot of editing. If you shoot raw, another choice would be to use a gray card but if shooting jpg, do this as part of your initial setup (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) and images are perfectly white balanced out of the camera.

It does what it claims to do and some of the things I really liked about the 2.0 version:
1. MADE IN USA (this is very important to me). The originals were probably made in China.
2. I stressed out about which one to buy when I learned about the first models but the 2.0 is currently only available in 77 mm size (removing one decision I had to make about which lens to buy it for). They have always recommend buying the biggest size though.
3. The other issue on the original was that there were two versions to choose from, an general use one and a studio version for portraits. The 2.0 is only available in what I would call the general use version. They have added a filter pack so that if you want to warm up the WB for portraits, you layer the included filter gels on the ExpoDisc (maybe when I take my annual Christmas card photo, I will mess with the gels).
4. The 2.0 is about half the cost of the original (also very important to me).

I am pretty sure this is the only thing I've ever rated 5 stars. If you were on the fence about buying one, jump off because this is definitely worth it. I will probably end up getting another one for a spare because I don't ever want to be without one of these. Seriously.

PS - I shoot on Nikon D7000

Saved me a lot of time in post production! And gives you 18% grey every time. I love the fact that it's a neutral white balance like the original expodisc but with the filters added over can be turned into a portrait (warm) white balance. To get this you would've had to pay for 2 original expodisc (combined 77mm-about $200) but with the new 2.0 it's a fraction of the price. Definitely should be in every photographers bag.

The new Expo Disk is much easier to place on to your lens and that is a big improvement over the original that I have depended on for years! Well done!!

I typically shoot in Kelvin, but in instances of mixed light, the exo disc is a great answer to a problem. It's pretty simple to use and white balance comes out very nicely. Take your time and play with it before you use it in a clutch situation, but once you've worked it out you will be glad you purchased it.

Poperly used, the ExpoDisc has provided easy and excellent white balance and colors. It is important to follow the directions though; namely to shoot the WB shot from the position of the subject, if possible.

Overall, this product is a fantastic "life hack" for photographers, especially in difficult light situations. Don't roll the dice with automatic white balance, and don't burden yourself in post; just skip to the right answer with the ExpoDisc 2.0!
