I bought this for a special needs kitten (SugarCheddar) at 6 weeks old. He had several eye infections and I used antibiotic eye ointment which cleared it up, but by then he had fallen behind in growth and was much smaller than his litter mate brother (SpiceBarry). I figured that the infection had sapped his calories and kept him from growing as much. But then I noticed that he wasn't walking very well and wasn't developing like his brother. It reminded me of a toddler with cerebral palsy.

I had some tuna juice on my fingers from feeding it to his mother (Sunflower) and SugarCheddar tasted it and went crazy trying to bite my finger. So I got him an eye dropper full of tuna-water and he was so hungry that I realized that he was starving. Apparently, his developmental problems, mostly low muscle tone and jerky movements were preventing him from nursing adequately and he wasn't able to get enough nutrition from his mom, Sunflower.

I had to get him something to eat fast, so I looked up solutions on the Net. There was a cat infant formula on some of the sites which involved mixing evaporated milk with a whole egg, Pedialyte, and baby vitamins but I was uncomfortable with the raw egg since raw eggs are loaded with bacteria, and I didn't have any Pedialyte or baby vitamins. So I just diluted some evaporated milk a little and fed that to him.

All I had was an eye dropper and I thought he was going to bite the tip off, he was so hungry. He couldn't control his head movements very well, so I wrapped him in a towel and stabilized his head with my hand while using the eye dropper to feed him.

After he was finally fed enough to be happy and full, I got on Amazon and found this product.

GREAT PRODUCT <<-- THE CANNED LIQUID. THE POWDER "EQUIVALENT" IS LESS EXPENSIVE AND COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, ALL BUT COMPLETELY SPURNED BY MOTHER OR KITTENS. I taste-tested it myself and it tastes completely different. Long testimonial: The two vets who said, "If your stray female cat is THIS old and hasn't been pregnant yet, she's obviously spayed but I just can't find the scar" and who said, "The internet says some females don't mature until 24 months? HAW HAW HAW!!!" were... ahem... wrong. So when two local toms knocked up 2-year-old Girlie Cat, she had to tolerate an owner of only neutered cats who has never even SEEN kittens younger than 8 weeks old. I had no clue how much nutritional support a lactating momcat needs. Four weeks postpartum, she was a 9-lb mom feeding 4.5 lbs of kittens. Despite eating HEAVILY and sucking down all the Half-and-half my housemate could pour for her, she began losing conditioning and her kittens began experimenting with crunchies from the Adult Bowls. I didn't know precisely what this meant, and the internet was no big help. I thought maybe some cats just wean early. So I replaced the adult crunchies with kitten chow softened with some KMR. As soon as I opened the KMR, Girlie Cat began sucking it down desperately. I immediately opened the tap for her. 36 ounces (3 big cans) and 1.5 days later, she had regained significant weight and returned to contentedly breastfeeding her contented kittens, who did not touch crunchies again until about the 6th week. They all still love KMR liquid, and I'm still giving the straight stuff to momcat, but I'm transitioning the babies to a mix of KMR liquid + KMR 2nd step powder mixed with kitten chow now that they're in their 7th week.

Much like the 2008 review by anonymous123, our new momma cat loves this stuff beyond words. She'll drink as much as I put in front of her in one sitting, up to the limit I'll give her based on being worried about her throwing up. She's basically drinking a can per day.

So here's what happened: Four weeks ago we found a pregnant cat wandering thru our yard, crying. Being cat people, we're very aware of all the loose kitty's in the neighborhood, and she was new. Also very skinny, except for the soccer-ball in her middle.

We fed her outside for a couple days, and then keenly aware from her reactions that she was an indoor kitty that somebody dumped in our neighborhood rather than deal with kittens, we talked her into coming inside. She complained for a couple minutes after the door closed, and then hasn't gone near the outside door since. She clearly recognized when her life just dramatically improved.

Two days later. . . seven kittens. Seven! She was already too skinny from being dumped for a few days before we found her. So we went to this stuff to help her have enough of her own milk to feed the kittens, and, as I said above, she loves it, loves it, loves it.

The kittens are three weeks old today, and we haven't heard a "not getting enough food!" complaint from them, nor any behavior of trying to find something else to eat outside the kitten box (some of them are beginning to toddle, so they could if they were feeling deprived). This next week we may start feeding them directly as they get more mobile. We'll see. As a previous poster noted, 9lbs of momma kitty trying to feed 5lbs of kittens. . . do the math, she needs help!
