I've been wanting to implement an external ssd boot drive to my thunderbolt equipped iMac for a while but kept finding that while thunderbolt is up to the task, the Sata controllers in most external drive enclosures are not. Seems a lot of them tout thunderbolt speeds but cap the drives throughput at sata2 (3 Gb/s) speeds. For many this isn't an issue but with the speed of the latest drives starting to saturate even the sata3 bus this is a little puzzling. Never fear. This dock won't keep your throughput down. I put a pair of 512GB OCZ SSDs in here raid 0 mode and I'm getting consistent 700 MB/s throughput for both reads and writes. Finally a drive enclosure that liberates your SSDs over the thunderbolt port. I also love how small and slick the case is. It looks much bigger in the photos. It matches the iMac perfectly and looks to be well made of quality bead-blasted aluminum. If you're looking for speed from thunderbolt this is the best option for the money. You'll spend a lot more to get here from any other manufacturer.

This external hard drive enclosure looks PERFECT alongside a Mac computer! I use it in conjunction with my iMac with Retina 5K Display for storing large amounts of 4K video. I configured this enclosure with 4x4TB(16TB total) worth of disk space. That may seem like a lot but due to the size of 4K video, it's nice knowing that I can daisy-chain additional enclosures(or other Thunderbolt devices) to this one in the future as the need arises. The aluminum design looks like and is very durable. The blue-colored LEDs on the bottom from display status, without blinding anyone working at the desk in front of it. The rubberized feed on the bottom of this enclosure are SUPER THICK and I do not feel vibration transferred to my computer desk like I did with other drive enclosures. That's a HUGE plus for me because I often use a microphone that is sitting on top of the same desk. It includes the Thunderbolt cable! All that the user needs to bring is up to four hard drives. There are RAID options but I personally opted for the out-of-the-box configuration. I simply slapped in my 4 hard drives (installation could not have been simpler. The only tool that I had to use was the included hex-style tool) and then fire up the Disk Utility application within Mac OS X. I built a concatenated disk set. That simply means that it makes all 4 physical drives appear as one large 16TB drive to Mac OS X. The beauty of this configuration for my purposes is that I can add another enclosure with more drives in the future, daisy-chain it to this enclosure and then expand the size of the concatenated disk set without having to rebuild anything/lose data. To be proactive I repurposed my USB 3.0 storage solution to function as a TimeMachine backup for this.Read more ›

This is a simple two drive thunderbolt array from Star Tech. What makes it interesting is that each drive has its own controller, so when using it in RAID 0 speeds can run higher than 5 gigabits per second. There also won't be much of a performance penalty for running in a mirrored RAID 1 mode given the discrete controller on each channel. Individually the controllers max out at about 3 gigabits per second, about on par with other thunderbolt drive adapters on the market.

Construction is solid and all metal. Drives can be hot swapped and the array overall is very accessible. I did have a little difficulty getting the lower drive out when everything is plugged in.

Overall this is a great little array and perfect for use with SSDs.

I would give this unit three stars except there are so few alternatives for Thunderbolt 2.5 inch enclosures. The fan noise bothered me so I disabled it, which is easy. The noise isn't very loud, but it's more of a buzz than a whir. SMARTReporter on my Mac tells me that my drives (Crucial M500 SSDs) run about 48 degrees C, with peaks around 55 degrees. This is a bit warm but far enough from the manufacturer's 70 degree rating that I'm not concerned. The manufacturer missed an opportunity, though, by not making the drive carriers fit better. The fit is loose and sloppy in the case, if they fit better more heat would be conducted to the case and the drives would probably run cooler.

Performance is OK, not great. I'm getting 320 MB/sec writes and 380 MB/sec reads using Blackmagic Disk Speed Test at its default settings and not using RAID. The same SSDs were faster in a Promise J4 enclosure (350 write, 480 read), but the Promise enclosure used proprietary Thunderbolt drivers and would frequently cause kernel panics and crash my Mac when waking from sleep. Promise has discontinued that enclosure rather than deal with the issue. This enclosure has no such problems. Overall I'm pleased.

Wanted a way to attach some SSD's to an iMac so I tried this box. It does work but the performance is not worth the price paid. Cloning two drives took nearly the same time as using a USB connection. The need to unplug the power & data cables to extract the drive from the low bay is just wrong. As is the need to screw rail brackets onto the drives before using. (Only 2 brackets are included)

I have no need/desire to run RAID 0 so maybe the benefits this unit offer are lost on me.
