My little guy is 2 and has always loved reading books with mom and dad. Hot Dots Jr. Favorite Fairy Tales takes reading books to the next level. Now we can read stories together over and over and he doesn't want to just pull the next book out. My son will actually listen to the story because he knows that at the end of each page there is something he gets to participate in with the Ollie the Owl pen. I love reading to him but I also love watching him figure out each activity on his own.

This set comes with 4 nice classic story books that my 4 year old enjoys when read to. Ollie the owl pen does not read the story to the children, he is merely used as an encouraging tool when children answer questions at the end of each page. For instance, a child is read how the shoemaker wakes up to a table of already made shoes in The Elves and The Shoemaker, at the bottom of the page there is a question to ask your child "Find the shoes with the shoelaces" there are 5 pairs of shoes on the table, each with a black dot next to them. If the child places the pen on the correct dots, Ollie will exclaim "Hooray!" or one of 4 other encouraging sounds. If it is placed on an incorrect circle "that's incorrect" or another corrective statement will be said. My son got frustrated that the pen had to be exactly on the dot to work and there are books with pictures that answer the questions correctly but don't have dots next to them. We do enjoy reading the books including the interactive question, but my son answers the question without the pen. Ollie is really cute but has been delegated to our other hot dots sets of the more flashcard learning format. I think this set would be a lot better if Ollie was actually able to read the book and/or question and it didn't require a dot next to the item, rather the item itself would elicit and answer.

While most children know the original tellings of The Gingerbread Man, The Elves and the Shoemaker, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Ugly Ducklings they will be thrilled with the fun, interaction retellings. My son has difficulty with pronunciation and the Hot Dots Jr. Favorite Fairy Tales helps him to be encouraged to read stories correctly. Ollie the Owl gets him excited about reading also.

I received Hot Dots Jr. Favorite Fairy Tales free for review purposes. All opinions are my own.

Hot Dots Jr. Favorite Fairy Tales includes Ollie the Owl Hot Dots pen and four fairy tales: The Gingerbread Man, The Ugly Duckling, Jack and the Beanstalk, and The Elves and the Shoemaker. Ollie requires 2 AAA batteries that are not included. To insert the batteries, you'll need a coin to unscrew a screw on the back to remove the battery door, insert the batteries, then replace the backing and tighten the screw.

Each story is read to a younger child by someone who can read well. On each page there is a question with an interactive black dot the kids can use Ollie with to answer the questions. It is important to make sure Ollie is right on the black dot in order to get it to work right. If Ollie is not over the black dot of a correct answer he will register an incorrect answer. I was a little disappointed that there is not an option for Ollie to read the stories to the kids, nor a way for it to keep track of answers and child's progress.

The kids really enjoyed sitting down with me to read, then taking turns answering the questions. I love that if you have more than one Hot Dots sets the Hot Dots pens are interchangeable with those sets, so a pen that becomes a favorite for the kids can be used on all of their favorite Hot Dots sets.

We used this storybook set after we had used the Let’s Master reading set. They were a great reward for having completed the Kindergarten book. My son was already familiar with the mechanics of the system by the time we got to the stories, and thought it was funny that we now got to play games with it. He enjoyed listening to the familar stories whilst having something new to interact with. We’re big on puzzles in our house so he really enjoyed getting to do an activity on each page. His two year old brother took an interest in these stories, but is definitely not of the right age to really appreciate them. Big brother did enjoy showing what was happening, and it was nice to have two sets so they could each have a pen. I like that the fairytales came with a wise old owl instead of the regular puppy. It was nice to have some new sound effects, and the kids got a big kick out of putting them side by side. He was a little distracted by the activities the first time around, but paid more attention to the story on subsequent readings. He was able to make up new games with the characters involved, based on the mechanics he learned with the pre-existing activities - though the answers were then wrong from the owl of course! Great to do with your kids, but also great for solo learning. They work well on short car trips, but I don’t think I could listen to the sounds for extended trips! Definitely great for stocking stuffers!

My son just started learning to read and write on his own and was very excited about this gift! He just loves it. This set has 4 24-page books and it comes with the Hot Dots Jr. Ollie-the Talking, Teaching OwlTM electronic pen and there are 11 activities in the books. What I really like about this set is that my son can listen to the story and see the words up close so he is starting to read better.
These books are great before bedtime or anytime really. The pictures are very bright and colorful. The sound affects are fantastic and my son gets a kick out of them.The fairytales are awesome. a lot of them my husband and I grew up with so it is awesome that my son can hear all the same one. I love that he is learning while having fun and he doesn't even realize it! I am always looking for great teaching tools and i really Love the Hot Dots Collection.
