Directions

I received the "Sheba Perfect Portions Pate in Natural Juices Entrée Canned Wet Food for Cats" (3 oz. - 24ct) via the Vine Program to evaluate, and I found it to be a decent quality product. I rate it 3 stars (ie, "okay") based on my findings detailed below:

Pluses (▲):
▲ Salmon is the primary ingredient; chicken liver & chicken are the 4th and 5th
▲ Our 15 lb DSH (domestic short hair) cat loved it, and her interest never waned
▲ The paté had a nice firm consistency, drizzled in fish oil, easy to eat

Neutrals & Commentary:
► We feed our cat a combination of dry and wet food; Newman's own is our preferred brand because it is all natural and typically has no by-products. We realize it's not fair to compare it Sheba, because it costs much more, which is why this comment is in the "neutral" section.
► Interestingly, it seems this brand comes from the Mars family...better known for their M&M's and other various confections. Might explain their willingness to add color to the paté.

Minuses (▼):
▼ Meat by-products and poultry by-products are the 2nd & 6th ingredients*
▼ "added color" is used to enhance the pink color...not sure what was used, but we prefer to avoid colorants
▼ We found the twin-pack tubs difficult to open without making a mess**
▼ The 2-section tubs are supposed to contain 3 oz, but they actually state 1.3 oz each (or, 2.6 oz total; maybe they are including the packaging in the weight?

*We try to avoid feeding our cat meat by-products, which can literally consist of any part of an animal, including, feet, skin, claws etc.

**We realize that some folks like this product the way it is, but just not the packaging!Read more ›

How does one review cat food? Should I take a little nibble myself? Maybe make little sandwiches for guests and ask their opinions on the "lovely new brand of canned salmon?" Or maybe I should just ask Toby (our 1-year-old tabby) his opinion? I opted to go with that last option and although Toby didn't have much to say on the matter, other than, "meeeeeeow?" his actions have spoken pretty clearly.

Toby likes it! He gobbled up the Sheba Perfect Portions Pate we served him for dinner one evening and has continued to devour it ever since. He doesn't always clean his plate entirely, though. On a couple of occasions, before I started breaking it up with a fork, I just let the whole portion plop onto his plate in one semi-congealed glob, and he (accidentally?) pushed a large chunk of it off his plate while eating. And he wasn't quite interested in it enough to retrieve it. But that was an anomaly. For the most part, he does seem to like it. By comparison, we tried feeding him some "Super Supper" (9 Lives), and he simply thumbed his nose at it. Not with an actual thumb... that would be weird, and painful to the thumb owner... but you know what I mean.

The ingredients look good: its main ingredient is "responsibly sourced" salmon and it includes no corn, soy or wheat, no artificial flavors and no artificial preservatives. So it seems to be a solid nutritional option, in addition to being a tasty one.

In terms of the packaging, it couldn't be much easier to open. Just peel back the foil top and plop the serving onto a plate, break off the used side and toss it. Do peel the top off slowly however, to prevent spillage of the gravy. No worries about refrigerating an open can for later. And the portion size seems about right for one meal for an adult cat.Read more ›

There are some things that cat owners know. The key one is that one never "owns" a cat. Ours, now about 8 years old was fully feral at age 1 when she conned her way into our lives. We named her Hecate, the name of a principal Greek Goddess, and which, when you say it, sounds like "Hey kitty!" In line with her name, Hecate won't eat just anything. We offer her the occasional scrap from the table when we are having dinner. She disdains chicken, dismisses beef, tentatively tolerates a little New Zealand lamb, and only really accepts the ultra-cheapy tuna that we buy in ten can lots from WalMart. Of that, she usually accepts about a quarter of a can as her daily due, in addition to the hopper full of dry cat food at which she can snack whenever she desires. With that background, you can understand that even thinking about introducing her to a commercial catfood would be difficult.

I invited her to review Sheba Perfect Portions Pate for me, and she sniffed at it carefully before carefully lapping up the sauce in which it is packed. She poked at the actual solid matter with a tentative paw, and dragged it across the plate. In the process the surface of the pate broke, and some attached itself to her paw, which she then proceeded to clean off with her tongue. Then, apparently, she had an apotheosis, because all of her attention was directed to the remainder of the pate until there was scarcely even a pattern left on the plate. The five stars above were not my own idea, but were imperially directed by Hecate. This is declared an absolute winner. As Hecate's custodian I am grateful to note that it is affordable, even to a crochety old dude living on Social Security. Sheba people? you nailed it.
