Corel's Pinnacle's Studio 18 PLUS sits between the 'regular' Pinnacle 18 (no Plus) and Pinnacle's ULTIMATE and, as expected, is a little more powerful and more feature-rich than the bare-bones Studio but lacks some of the more exotic gee-wiz ones found in the Ultimate such as 4K support.

Installation went actually well on my Windows 7 laptop. Once I chose 'typical' which translates into 'full install', I received the following modules - it took quite a while, by the way, possibly 20-30 minutes to complete:

- Pinnacle Studio Application
- Standard Content Pack
- Hollywood FX Vol 1-3
- Premium Pack Vol 1-2
- Scorefitter Vol 1-2
- Creative Pack Vol 1
- Title Extreme

Which translates into more features and capabilities that I will ever use or need or even think about using, which is good. Once installed and patched, the product ran well. A little slow which I blame on my laptop but without freezes or crashes.

This versions comes with 1800 2D/3D effects (didn't count them but that's what Corel claims and they are indeed 'many'. It also has a number of royalty-free music tracks, Scorefitter libraries for creating custom soundtracks, allows direct capture of my computer screen together with sound, and so for.

What I am trying to say is that this is, overall, a good package and it would be an easy 5 stars rating given the relatively low price considering the features if it wasn't for Corel's always unfriendly sometimes bordering to 'hostile' way of treating its customers. Examples? Okay. As soon as the product was registered, an friendly email came, titled "Welcome to your 14 day free warranty support". What happens after that? You guessed right. My review echoes the conclusions of numerous reviewers in 3 regards:

1) Installation takes a long time and renders your computer unusable while it is in process. My laptop was grinding away so loudly and got so hot that I had a huge regret that I hadn't backed up my files before starting the installation. I really thought that I was going to have a hard drive meltdown. My laptop is just 1 year old and does meet the minimum recommended requirements for this s/w. Startup of the software also takes a long time - probably about a minute. When you run it for the first time it finds and imports all applicable images, movies and audio files which also takes a very long time.

2) There is absolutely no help file or quick start guide. If you want help you have to pay for it. I've been a user of Microsoft and Adobe and other complex software products for decades and rely constantly on various on-line learning resources to become competent with those products. This condition will leave many potential users cold. The best way to ensure customer loyalty is to make sure that they can easily adopt and learn to love the products, and Corel has missed the mark here. The fact that support is a paid service is not evident in the marketing materials.

3) The user interface, while it seems to be similar to other video editing products, is not at all intuitive so a quick-start guide or high level overview would go a long way to getting the user to complete a first project. I tried several times to figure out the basics and abandoned each project in frustration. I have found some Youtube videos which should help, particularly this one:

Others have reviewed the performance and capabilities of Pinnacle Studio 18 Plus. Rather than duplicate what they have already said (most of which I pretty much agree with) I am going to focus this review on the installation and out of the box experience.

When you first see the box, it appears large enough to include the CD and a decent user manual. However, the size of the box is deceptive. All that the box contains is the CD, an installation pamphlet printed in 15 languages and a lot of empty air. There is no real user documentation included.

I've said it before and I will say it again--"Hey software vendors! Some of us do read your manuals. So please include more than a brief installation guide with your product!"

The fact that Corel has chosen to not include a manual is a major oversight that detracts from the value of the software. It also cheats the user. With a product as sophisticated and complex as Pinnacle Studio 18 Plus, a decently printed manual with good color screen shots is absolutely essential!

Corel requires a significant amount of personal information in order to register the product. This includes an email address, a snail mail address and a phone number. As easily and frequently as businesses are hacked these days, Corel should limit the information that they ask the user to provide in order to register the product.

Installation takes a very long time--even on a decent computer. My PC is relatively new, has plenty of memory, a decent processor and fast hard drive. Yet the "typical" installation including the required prerequisites such as .Net, the content packages and updates took nearly an hour to complete.
